Left Shoulder Pain...gas or something else?

Recommended Posts

I need some advice. I had surgery last Wednesday, so I'm a week and one day post-op. I had a really hard time with the gas. It caused more pain than anything. Now I have one spot just under my collar bone and shoulder that hurts so bad. That's where the gas settled, my shoulders and chest. I'm a little concerned because it still hurts so bad. Taking a deep breath puts pressure and makes it hurt until I exhale. It doesn't hurt at night. I still have gas and burp a lot, but nothing seems to help this pain. If it's just gas I know it will go away, but I guess my main concern is a blood clot. Coughing doesn't cause any pain, only inhaling. I had my post-op appointment yesterday, but only got to see the nurse. She said it's probably gas. Did anyone else have gas pain like this and for this long?

Unfortunately the gas can last a few weeks. Mine did. It does sound like it is just gas, and I can only suggest you take some Gas-X to help. It will work its way out. Hang in there! And Congrats and welcome to band-land!

There are numerous threads on this forum about shoulder pain. I know too well this feeling!! Mine always came back as a sharp stabbing pain in my left collarbone area whenever I got too full, hadn't eaten in around 5 or so hours or drank soda. My doctor said it was caused by your stomach now being at a different angle since surgery and when it expands, it touches a nerve that leads to your left shoulder. It is pretty common now. I had it for 3 years after surgery but funnily enough it went away once I had port revision surgery so maybe it's relevant to port placement too. You aren't too far out of surgery so it may not be this but if it continues during these times, it may be a possibility. Hopefully not!!!

You might try exercising your arms and shoulders, an of course a lot of walking. Just don't do anything heavy or strenous, like lifting, pushing, or pulling, that might upset your port site before it scars or seats in place. Lots of walking and moving, usually helps break those air bubbles into smaller ones where they are easier to dissipate. It is very early fr you and exercise should take care of it if it is gas. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your responses. Gas-X doesn't help me much, walking and moving around does. I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy and that it will get better. I was also interested to see someone else say that being hungry or not eating made their's worse. Mine too. I finally realized that was happening and it seems to be the precursor to actually feeling hunger pains. Weird! Of course if I eat too fast or too much, it hurts as well. It does seem to be getting better, of course I'm also getting better at listening to my body and the band. Sitting up really straight, like when driving, can also bother my shoulder. I also go to school and sitting for 1 1/2 hours in a desk kills me. So, maybe it's the port hitting a nerve in that position or maybe it's just because I'm still healing. I sure hope so, I have a lot more time to sit in a desk over the next couple of years. Anyway, thanks again!

I am only three days post-op & I took my medicine pump off this morning & every since then my should has hurt. It is a scary feeling I think in terms of blood clots & heart attacks. My bariatric nurse warned me about such symptoms & I guess the medicine pump I had in me for 72 hrs really healped with the left shoulder pain because I had no left shoulder pain before I took it out. I will be very happy when I am feeling better.

My shoulder pain lasted about three weeks. I started noticing it was only when eating certain foods or eating to quickly so I just tried to avoid those. It eventually went away.

I haven't eaten anything today and I'm in pain in my left shoulder area. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks post-op and I really wish I hadn't had this surgery. I'm tired of hurting. Today it just hurts to breathe. I'm really scared it's this nerve/diaphragm thing and I'm guessing there's no cure? Other than taking the band out?

Dia,

I also am almost 2 weeks out and am sick of the pain. My left shoulder pain is horrible, i can take being sore, but the constant shoulder pain is really wearing on me. the first 4 days the gas was HORRIBLE, and i have had the shoulder pain non stop since surgery. I am hoping it goes away, but from reading most of the threads, it doesn't seem like it's going to anytime soon. I'm not happy with the band as of yet also.

HI I had surgery on 3/5 and 2 days later, started having the awful left shoulder pain. Tylenol did nothing to relieve it. I did start putting heat on it, drinking warm fluids, getting up and walking around and rotating my shoulder. That helped. Now the pain is 99% gone, I have twinges now and then, or a faint ache, but it is mostly gone. It is bad, try to hang in there. I had the heating pad thing that is made of beads and heats up in the microwave so it was pretty portable for work.

Hope this helps and that your shoulder pain gets better soon.

Hi - I was banded on 3/5 and also had terrible shoulder/neck pain for the first week. I was totally freaked out because it also radiated down my arm and into my chest (heart area) too. I got some feedback from this forum from others who also experienced this pain and was somewhat comforted. My pain subsided after about two weeks. I did try to walk alot (mostly around and in the house during the first days after surgery). Good luck - hope yours goes away quickly also!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
