Drink some stuff to clean you out

Recommended Posts

I didn't have to drink it for this surgery but have had to in the past for the other procedures. I think DancingLamb gave great advice for a horrible experience. I would recommend taking it earlier as well. I mean once your bowel is clean and you don't eat more, you won't be collecting more either .

Disney-Freak, the stuff you drink for this just cleans out your entire bowel, by forcefully expelling it from your body in a matter of hours and dr.s don't recommend taking it without discussing with them first, because the more stuff you take, the more risk you have of creating a dependence on laxitives and these preparations to go to the bathroom. It empties your small and large intestine, but doesn't do anything else, so I am not sure it would help with bloating.

Oh and I forgot to say but any weight you lose by doing this (and depending on the number of last meals you had if you didn't do a pre-surgery diet you can lose a number of pounds over night) is not a true weight loss, since as soon as you eat anything, you will start collecting in your intestine and the weight will be distressingly back).

I always plug my nose when I have to drink something nasty and it helps minimize the taste. I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about nasty tasing stuff. Yuck!

Trust me on this: Drink the lemon ginger flavored Phospasoda mixed with lemonade. The last time I had it, I bought "Simply Lemon"

brand, and it was so much easier than ever before. It tastes like salty lemonade, but it went down quickly. Plus, since you're supposed to drink lots of liquids with it, you can really dilute it as much as you want with the lemonade, and you won't get much of the nasty flavor.

The next best thing is to see if the doctor will let you do the pill prep that can be used to prepare for a colonoscopy. You'll still need to drink lots of liquids, but the pills don't have a flavor.

I've had several colonoscopies over the years due to IBD, so I've become somewhat of an expert on how to clear out the intestines.

A poo pill! What will they come up with next?! How awesome is that? I wish... Nope. Got the instructions for the Phosposoda.

Thanks for the headsup on the lemonade. I was going to go with gingerale.

You might want to think about getting some baby wipes. ( I recommend Huggies Shea Butter) They will be so much better on your bottom when you have wiped a million times

Yes, but FLUSHABLE ones. Otherwise, it will be a *very* bad time to have a clogged/overflowing toilet!

i was told to drink the magnesium citrate through a straw so that it goes straight down your throat and you taste it less. and make it VERY cold.

I have taken Megnesium citrate before and it is a MUST to have it real cold and I bought baby wipes and the softess two ply T/P i could find. It hit me round 30 to 60 minutes later. So please dont go shopping or dive any where. I have also taken a tea called smooth move.... I drink it hot with a little splenda...It takes longer for it to work on me....

I don't think I will ever eat a lemon again..LOL...I started it at 3:30 and ended up finshing it at 4:00. That's how bad I had it in my mind. So far so good, not running yet to the bath room except I been peeing alot since I took it..So I hope it works and I don't have no problems tomorrow.Take care everyone!!!

I've had 3 colonoscopies, twice I used Phosphosoda (Ewww!) and once I used Miralax™. The Miralax was extremely more pleasant, both in flavor (mixed with Gatorade it is tasteless) and cause many fewer trips to the bathroom and no cramping, yet was just as effective.

If you can, get your doctor to prescribe Miralax. I guarantee you will be glad you did.

This is what my GI doctor prescribed for me:

1. Four DULCOLAX LAXATIVE tablets from the pharmacy-- MUST BE THE LAXATIVE PILLS! (over-the-counter).

2. MIRALAX powder 238gm bottle (over-the-counter).

3. 64 oz. of Gatorade or Powerade. Diabetics may use diet soda, any flavor.

Drink over a 2 to 4 hour period.

I had to take a bottle of Magnesium Citrate the day before, to clean everything out. I got the cherry, and I have to say it was not that bad. It was like a tart shirley temple. I actually took this stuff again not too long ago when I was having stomach pains (1/2 bottle this time).

I never had to take any laxative pre-op, thank god. I hate it so much. haha. I would rather just about anything else happen except for GI discomfort.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
