5 years worth of medical records and BCBS

5 years worth medical records BCBS

Have any of you with BCBS (I have Blue Shield Access HMO and am in CA) been approved without 5 years worth of records. Does it have to be the last 5 years?

I have not had insurance and maybe have 1-3 doctors visits during this time. However, since I've had 6 kids (starting in 1981 and ending in 2000) I can get them weight/blood pressure records in 9 month increments from the obs office:blink:

I really hate to think I'm going to have to wait 5 years to begin this process. I believe I'm a great candidate for surgery and my BMI is 42.

Thank You!

I have BCBS...

Here's the skinny on the 5 year. They like it a lot, but it doesn't necessarily have to be 5 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. If you can get 5 weights within the last 10-15 years, you should be fine. I was in a similar situation. Instead, I had my grandmother who works at a doctor's office a few states away just manufacture some weights for me. I know, immoral, but after dealing with BCBS for 4 months on this, I am none to happy with their morality standards. My struggle with BCBS has nothing to do with that weight history though, my BMI was above 50. Anywho, suffice to say it is no longer above 50.

No one.... not the insurance company, the doctor, no one batted an eye at that 5 year weight history that was fudged for me. In any case, my doctor informed me that not many people have a 5 year CONSECUTIVE history. Remember, the more data you submit to the Insurance, the better off you are... so if you have 20 years off and on, then submit everything you got.

Good luck and please let me know how it works.

Thank You! That makes me feel more encouraged. I'm not concerned about the morality issue. If I must, I will find a way myself.

I've been over 40 BMI for most of my life and spent a good amount of time trying to dress to hide it. I find it ironic I am now concerned about proving it:laugh:

I actually just got off the phone with BCBS-IL, and the lady was so nice. When I asked about the five year history, she said feel free to dump in any medical documentation re: weight/BMI/weight-loss/co-morbidities from as far back as you've been obese. She said the more info, the better. So I can't imagine they'd punish you for sending them information from more than five years out, as long as it shows you've been obese.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
