Protein-Sparing Modified Fast Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here been required to do the Protein-Sparing Modified Fast diet by their nutritionist? This diet consists of the simply 9oz of meat per day, divided equally in 3 oz portions. One portion is consumed in each of 3 distinct meals. They are able to test whether you've been successful on this diet by checking for ketones in the urine. I have been on the diet since Monday and every single minute is a struggle.

I am so damned hungry I want to cry. This is a very trying time for me. I am determined to do it, though. The sole purpose for this diet, though, is to prove to the office that a patient can follow instructions and has the willpower to stick with the food requirements after surgery. I'm starving so much that I'm shaking and I am also mentally foggy. This is a problem since I work in IT and need to be very focused.

Here's my question though:

Is the diet following surgery this torturous? Will I be starving after surgery? Am I setting myself up to feel this miserable for the rest of my life? I've been reading that people can eat pretty much anything once they've healed, only in very small portions. Do you who have had the lap band done honestly feel satisfied after eating? These are all important questions and I'm turning to you, the experts, who have had the surgery and live with the band daily.

I really want this to be a positive experience and I would appreicate any feedback at all.

Thank you,

Theresa

No, it's not torturous after surgery. For me it was like they did surgery on my brain for the first week or so-I ate a couple bites and felt full. You DO NOT get hungry while you're on liquids after surgery. I ate 1/2 a soft taco from Taco Bell 2 weeks after surgery and was VERY full. I'm 5 years post-op and have lost 129 pounds as of today. I'm grateful I made the decision to change my life. I was a whopping 324 pounds when I got a band. I'm unable to eat a whole Lean Cuisine for lunch because I get full. I never thought I'd be able to say that! Don't be afraid of being hungry. You won't be. Your mind will tell you that you need to eat, but that's the food addiction talking--ignore it and go do something you enjoy to take your mind off food. You'll do fine! Good luck!

Thanks so much for the reply, and congratulations on your incredible and wonderful weight loss. I'm presently around 335, bigger than most of the people on this site who have mentioned their starting weights. You are an inspiration to me, and I can't wait for the day when I hit my goal of 180.

Thanks again!

You WILL reach your goal weight just hang in there. If you fall off the wagon just get right back on there! Take one day at a time and in no time at all you'll be swimsuit shopping--yes, I said swimsuit shopping!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
