Cousin passed, had lapband now the family is freaking

Recommended Posts

I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But one word of warning - Just look into it very thoroughly first. The band is not everything it is made out to be to all people. For some people it works extremely well for others it doesn't. Don't overlook possible problems just because you have your mind set on it. Check out all the possible complications listed on this site and make sure that you are prepared for it. I didn't and now I am sorry. I know there are many here who love their band and it has been wonderful for them, I am afraid I am not one of them and the disappointment is extreme.

Losing: Any new information?

I would think that the doctors would want to know why she went into a coma in the first place. She was very young. If they were treating her for a few weeks in a coma, they must have had some idea of what was going on. If it was her band that caused it (not sure how though), I would think they'd remove it immediately to increase her chance of survival. I'm a little confused...I really think you are just not being told all of the facts. Often times when we are faced with death, people begin to speculate in order to have an answer for such tragedies. Unfortunately this can lead to rumors and then no one is sure of what happened. I pray you and your family get some facts from the doctors and find peace with her death.

I can certainly understand that you'd be hesitant about getting banded after all of this, but keep in mind that RNY is much more dangerous. Many complications and a high mortality rate. Be sure to do your homework and make an informed decision about your health. Talk to your own surgeon as well about this and see what light he/she can shed on the situation.

Take care

~C

So sorry to hear about your cousin. It must have been such a shock to her family. I can almost guarantee that the coma was unrelated to the lapband surgery. Seems like her parents or spouse would demand an autopsy to get to the bottom of it. Complications with lapband are very minimal and death is certainly not one of them. You are right to go ahead with the surgery. Bypass is so much riskier. You need to take control of your life. I know that had I not had the surgery, the path that I was on would have eventually resulted in a stroke or heart attack. I am only 3 months out and my lifestyle has change 100%. I am at the gym 6 days a week and feel so much better. You can rest assured there is much more to the story than you are getting. I hope you find comfort in the memories you have of your cousin. Perhaps her death can inspire you to live your life to the fullest.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It is kind of frightening to hear that the band was the cause of death. I actually don't see how? There has to be more to this than death from a band. That is my opinion of course. I think you need to find out what happened just to have some closure for yourself. In my research on banding I did find some deaths from banding. It seems that the cause was infections and heart attacks from something done at surgery or maybe the patient should not have had surgery in first place.

My prayers are with you.

Did someone tell them your cousin's coma was related to the band, or is it just something they pieced together, like maybe if she'd had pudding for dinner that could also be why?

30 lbs in 5 weeks, unless she was like underweight when she had her band, is nothing terrible. I lost over 30 in my first 1 week.

Sorry to heara bout your loss, and sorry your family is reacting in such a knee-jerk reaction. It's easy to point your finger at "the only thing different," even if it has no connections to what's going on. Hopefully they will ease up on you a bit.

Question - is having pudding bad? I'm confused by that statement. Thanks.

That was just an exaggerated example of how it could 'be anything'.

I am 22 months out with my share of problems from the band--did not want to have bypass because others that I know had it with their share of BIG problems...I had problems with the band and ended having it removed and bypass on Nov 27 2007--had lost most of my weight..and had gall bladder out in Oct...thoght that was the problem--then had dialated esophagus and had band removed...thought all was fine, G-d knows I had every test under the sun...March 17 I had what I thought was indigestion--not that simple!! had a stent put in my heart--not the fault of the band/bypass/gall bladder--just a lifetime of bad eating and genes!! If I had not done something about my weight over the last 22 months what I had was called the "widow maker"...hopefully I have beat the grim reaper...and LOL without a"white castle" eatery ( I am sure you have seen the comercial) all kidding aside, I am grateful for the journey and the results no matter what...it hasn't been easy but noone gave me any guarantee!!! Make an educated decision and be mindful of the pitfalls. Best of luck!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
