Postponing first fill?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was banded 2-15 and am doing very well. My first fill is scheduled for 3-27. Here is my quandry..on 4-12 I am leaving on a two week cruise.

Is 2 1/2 weeks long enough after a fill to know that all is well, or would I be better served postponing the fill until after I return?

The more I think on it, I think I should postpone. Just looking for input from those who have had fills already.

I am NOT thinking of postponing so that I can eat more. Just thinking of possible troubles!

Thanks!!

Denise

My vote is to hold off. Restriction takes time to get used to. Being in a social environment is not going to be easy when it comes to eating the right foods, eating slowly, chewing well, etc. And if you have a problem who will unfill you?

If you do get a fill before the trip DO get a special Huber needle from your doc to take with you in case it is necessary. The ship's doctor should be able to fix the problem if one arises. But I can promise you he won't have the type of needle necessary to do the job. So take one with you.

Talk with your doctor when you go to your appointment and see what they say. I was also travelling not long after what would have been my first fill and so my doctor suggested that I defer it which I did.

Enjoy the cruise.

Thanks WABB and MSS, I appreciate the input. I plan to call the doc and speak to his Nurse Practitioner about it, but the more I think on it, the more I think postponing is the best choice. Like someone on this board said, this is a marathon--not a sprint, and I don't really want to risk ruining my vacation because I was antsy to start on fills.

Hi. I'll be the devil's advocate here! HAHA. 2.5 weeks is more than enough to know if you will have any problems. Also, since this if your first fill, you won't have a lot of restriction anyway (usually the case). Personally, I'd get the fill and get another one when you get back from the trip. I've gotten fills and gone on vacation in a few days with no problems. But, see what your doc thinks and take his/her advice.

Thanks for that input! All opinions are welcome!

Today I have felt the most "normal" (and hungry) since my surgery.

I am not going to cancel the appointment just yet. It is still a ways away. I am playing it by ear, but will talk with the nurse before I go in.

Such a decision! I want to take the next step, but at the same time I don't want to ruin a very expensive vacation!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
