food stuck...help...and introduction

Guest susan

Hi. I am Susan from NJ. I was banded on 12-10-04 in NYC with Dr. Ren. I have had a number of fills and finally have some restriction. I started this endeavor weighing 209 pounds. I lost about 9 pounds pre-op. After my fifth fill in an Inamed 4cc band, I finally feel some restriction. Matter of fact, tonight, I officially got food REALLY stuck. I am not sure what even happened. I had just begun eating in a restaurant with my husband and daughter, when, suddenly, I felt it. Two other times when something got stuck, it passed within a minute or two. Not tonight! I now know what that awful word, "sliming" means and I even tried to gag myself to bring it up. Only partially successful. Finally I pb'd just saliva and feel much better (after an hour.) I do not know what to do in this situation. Even now, although I do feel better, when I had a sip of hot Water a little while ago, I felt uncomfortable again. Will this pass on its own? What happens when I'm out socializing?

Sorry, this is the way I am introducing myself. HOpe I won't always be remembered in this situation.

Any words of widsom, please~!!!!!!

Welcome, Susan! Sounds like you're a grown-up Bandster now, already had a sliming/pb. Isn't that the pits? You need to stay on liquids for a day or two and let your esophagus rest. Just try to remember to eat slowly, little pencil-eraser size bites, and chew the smithereens out of it before swallowing. Wow, you've already had 5 fills! What is your current fill at? Congratulations on the 10 pound loss!

Hi Marie,

Thanks for the welcome. My fills started at about 6 weeks out with: 1cc, 1cc, .5cc,.4cc,.5cc equalling about 3.4cc total as of one week ago. Tonight was very frightening. I am not sure if I did the right thing or not. How long do these episodes usually last? I certainly am not looking forward to another experience like this one. Now I am afraid to go to sleep...not sure if it really cleared yet. Yes, I guess I am officially a club member now.

You have an awfully tight fill. You will probably always need to be careful. It's funny how you'll find yourself scoping the bathroom out before you sit down (just in case). I've only slimed once and that was enough for me. Had a few small pbs though..usually from eating too fast and/or swallowing too big a bite.

Be sure that you don't eat anything 2 to 3 hours before you lie down. Drink some Water to flush your pouch out. Hope all is well and you get a good night's rest.

Welcome to slimeworld, it really sounds gross, but it's so much better once you've gotten the cuprit out. Don't know if I'll ever learn to chew enough, that and too large of a bite

Hi Susan,

Yep, been there, done that. The very worst episode I ever had happened without warning when a tiny piece of seaweed salad got stuck. It didn't resolve for well over an hour, during which I had constant pain. But it finally did, and WHEW what a relief!!

You're getting very good advice--you want to stay on liquids and soft foods for a day or two. And you just have to learn from experience with regard to prevention. I know that I'm more likely to eat without thinking if I'm in a social situation; it takes extra practice to concentrate when you're out in a restaurant.

Welcome to LBT, fellow Jerseyan!! Check out the New Jersey section for news on support groups and a bandster gathering being planned for the fall.

Thanks everyone!!! I am feeling like a different person today. What a relief. I will do liquids for two days. The good part is that I lost a little more. I really appreciate the guidance via this and other threads. susan

SUsan, glad to hear you are feeling better. I have had 4 PB's in 11 months and my last one was the worst. SO I now take it very very slow..As Marie said, with your filllevel you will always need to be careful..good luck to you :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
