What the heck do I do with all this damn protein???

Recommended Posts

I started my pre-op liquid diet - two weeks, in theory, six SlimFast Optima shakes a day.

I understand the aims and principles of the diet. And I know that getting in adequate Protein is key, so I bought a grain silo-sized bag of unflavored whey protein isolate, as I'd heard it was the best one to get.

But now that I have it, what do I actually DO with it? I added some to my chicken broth tonight, and it was a bit icky but basically edible. But the broth was hot - would that affect the protein? I noticed that the package specified adding to cold milk or Water.< /p>

So, what do you Bandsters DO with your Protein Powder?

F.

well that is a lot of Protein powder. try using milk and sf Jello and make a shake, or add to cream Soups as you have done already. you can add it to apple sauce after you are banded and add to sauces you may use later in your regular food phases. right now i think you may be limited to the milk because of pre op. i ad mine to milk and use sf jello flavors and sf pudding. i am on pre op and will be until 3/5/08. then it will be again after surgery, however my surgeon does allow anything that can be poured from a spoon so that is a very good thing, i need to have some other flavors in my daily routine. oh yah yogurt may be a good thing to add it to as well. keep us posted on yoru creativity. good vibes g2s

Mix it with Carnation Instant Breakfast, just add 3 extra ice cubes and put in the blender.

I also mix it in with frozen smoothie mix to get my Protein in a different way. Just always add an extra ice cube everytime.

I don't think that the whey protein powder goes well with hot things.

The best thing I do with unflavored whey Protein isolate is to make instant pudding as a protein snack:

Put two cups of cold skim milk into a bowl and add two scoops of unflavored protein and stir. Add 1 small box of fat free / sugar free instant pudding (my favs are chocolate fudge or butterscotch) and whip for 2 minutes.

Each box will make four 1/2 cup servings and has approx 15 grams of protein (not counting the skim milk too), so I'll have one in the evening between dinner and bedtime.

I've also read here that people add it to mashed potatoes, oatmeal and soups--but it must be less than 130 degrees or the protein will clump on you. Good luck with all that protein! :)

(reposted from another thread) I am too lazy to retype all of this lol

Personally, I do not like the "milky" type Protein shakes... I have always been more of a gatorade type girl. I tried a lot of Protein Drinks before I had my surgery so I would know what I liked and didn't like.

You can buy samples of protein drinks at Vitalady.com - Protein supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks!. I think she has a few hundred different types. I paid $1.50 for each sample (which was one serving... 34.5g of protein). The "Nectar" lemonade flavor is really good :)

She also sells this really cool battery operated mixing/drinking cup. I bought one... just to try... then went back and bought FOUR more!

I absolutely L-O-V-E "CytoSport" Protein drinks (the tangerine tastes just like Sunny-D). This brand also has the highest amount of potassium that I have found. 40g of protein per bottle, zero carbs, 160 calories (I think). You can buy them at the VitaminShoppe, GNC, etc.

The "ProteinSLAMs" are also pretty good. I like the peach flavored one. Sometimes they seem a bit too syrupy though and I have to dilute them.

I also make POPSICLES out of these protein drinks for when I am feeling "snacky". I have discovered that diluting them with a little with Water before pouring them into the popsicle molds prevents them from melting too fast.

I try to "eat" at least 10-20 grams of protein each meal... and then drink one or two protein drinks to reach my goal of 100 grams per day.

Check out the DaVinci sugar free syrups for flavor variations on shakes! They have tons of flavors! You can mix them up----chocolate and coconut....or use the chocolate pudding and add a tbsp. of peanut butter....make your flavor combinations---and add your Protein powder.

The DaVinci syrups, you can get shipped---they ship quick---never had one broken either---and several bottles (3 I think) ship for the same cost as 1. They do limit shipping in freezing weather though---for obvious reasons!!! www.davinci.com

Just a happy customer, no affiliation with the company!!!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
