Struggling with OptiFast!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I stumbled across this forum last week, and have had an absolute blast reading all of your threads, they have been really informative and i now know a little more of what i am to expect. I am being banded on March 17th and have been on Optifast for 5 days now. I started well, but am unfortunatly already thinking about slipping :tt2:...Does anyone have any tips as to how to avoid 'tempation', so to speak!

Also, just went out and bought a 21 pack of the vanilla shakes...and cant stand them! Does anyone have any tips as to how to make them, or any of the foods for that matter, a little more interesting, because at the moment I am barely managing to get through my 'sludge'!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, I did Optimuck for 4 weeks before banding. Check with your Dr before using additives but there are ways of improving the taste. I made an orange soda spider with the vanilla opti - just add your favourite diet soft drink instead of Water, some ice and blend. Also you could add some diet cordial to make different flavours, the little bottles of essence that you buy in the baking aisle in Coles can help. Melt some diet jelly crystals in a little hot Water and mix - creates some great flavours especially if you also add essence. Also the colder the water is the thicker and better the Opti tastes. You can also freeze it and eat it with a spoon rather than drink it.

Are you allowed the veges? If so try making a salsa that you can pick at during the day - helps to tame the hunger. I was also allowed diet jelly, so this helped with the hunger as well.

good luck, it's worth sticking with it in the end.

thanks very much!

i tried adding vanilla esscence to the vanilla one today and just made it a hundred times worse :tt2: but ill deffinatly try adding the diet soft drinks instead of Water...ive been trying to stay away from the stuff but maybe if i just do it every couple of days it might work...

ive found the jelly to be a god send!! i have been adding strawberry jelly crystals to the strawberry shake and thats been going really well, and today i discovered the desert mousse stuff, and that i think is going to be my saviour - its fantastic!

In regards to the vegies, yes im allowed two cups a day, i have been trying to save them for dinner time and just stirfrying them up by themselves, purely for the reason that i have something to eat when the family sits down for dinner...

I wonder if you can verify something for me? With the vegies, is it 2 cups cooked or raw?

Thanks again - you have been very handy!!

When I asked my dietician it was 2 cups of cooked - which is good as you get that bit more.

With the chocolate, try adding either coconut essence or mint flavour and freezing (kinda like a choc-mint ice cream). I found lime cordial was great in the vanilla too.

Keep on the diet as best you can - it's a great kick start to the weight loss - people lose between 5 and 15kg on this pre-op (depends on how good you are and how long you're on it) It will also make the op easier and less risk of any problems or your liver being to big (then they would have to give you a full cut op not just keyhole- to be avoided!!)

Not long to go now!!

Im banded on the 19th March and due to start opti on the 5th. One thing Im really worried about is the fact that I am not really a sweet tooth so the thought of drinking only sweet stuff makes me gag thinking about it. I know Im going to struggle.

You know I have yet to meet anyone who actually likes this stuff.

Makes you wonder why they can't improve the taste.

My tip, if you like coffee, add some Decaf and it tastes heaps better.

And I agree it definitely is better really cold.

Opti also makes Soups - I didn't try them myself, but if you want something savoury others have made up the Soup and added some of their veges to it to make it more filling. If you need to chew, you can get bars.

The link for Optifast food list is attached. Most doctors have you do the intensive stage, but if unsure, contact your Dr first.

hi,

The bars are yum.

I am not fond of sweets and prior to mu operation I made a broth of chicken necks and veges on the list - it just kept me going.

Just have patience - when u look back after your op. u will understand how it just makes things easier.

I lost 6 kilos after doing one week opti-yuk haven't weighed myself for almost 2 weeks now but I am sure I have lost more - it is motivating me now after the surgery.

You go girl and just don't look back..

regards and all the best

I don't mind the taste of the choc shake.

Mind you it is only day 1 but I was expecting it to be foul so I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for all your help. I've become quite partial to the chocolate mousse Desserts... its the best time of the day now!

I made a broth last night like you suggested, using all the vegies on the list, Water and a little bonox, and it was really really good...was enough leftovers for my allowance today too!

I love your 'opti-yuk'! My family and friends have quickly gotten to calling it optisludge and optispew (charming i know, thats my 12 year old sister for you!) but we'll have to introduce that one! they'll love it!

thanks for everyones help! i keep telling myself that its worth it and ill thank myself for it one day!

2 and a half weeks to go!!! :)

Thanks again!

Hi,

Don't worry, EVERYBODY hates OptiFast!

Get your hands on the bars and pudding. The bars taste fine and you actually get to chew, which you won't be doing for a while after the surgery anyway (ie liquid stage). Also they're really convenient, just toss one in your bag and your set, doesn't matter if you're out and about or running late or whatever. berry Crunch bars got me to the finish line of 4 weeks of Optifast.

The pudding is good for a change, and is handy after the surgery too.

Use caution with carbonated soft drinks as they can bloat and stretch your stomach and make you feel more hungry (before surgery) and stretch out your pouch and fill you prematurely (after surgery). You're probably better off sticking to flavorings.

If you really miss the taste of diet Coke etc you will need to beat the daylights out of it to make it go flat, or you could try a trick I have just been told - drop a Degas tablet into your can or small bottle of soda - takes the gas out real fast. Haven't tried it myself so would be interested in hearing anyone else's thoughts.

Oh and if you add soda to your Optimuck, remember to beat the cr*p out of it with your blender - takes the gas out too.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
