Surgery Count Down

Recommended Posts

So this is going really fast…

Today I went in for my consultation, and they told me to go ahead and start the Protein Shake twice a day and that I would have my Pre-Op meeting with my doctor (our first meeting) then next Friday the 29th will be my surgery date… WOW That’s Fast!!! I’m So Excited; and a little scared to tell you the truth.

Wow, that's not a whole lot of time to wrap your head around the changes you are about to experience! Make sure that in the meantime you read a lot so you know what to expect. Try not to focus on the complication threads right now, as even though there may be a lot of them, it's only because most people only post when they are having difficulty, not when they are sailing right along and I can guarantee that they far out weigh the ones who have problems. Be aware that complications can occur and what the signs are, but don't dwell on them. Instead, concentrate on threads that explain how things went for people, their recovery after surgery, and their feelings. Learn what is normal and what is not. Get a list of things that you will need after surgery i.e. Gas-x strips, liquid tylenol, maybe a heating pad, a small pillow, etc. After surgery, know that you will need to walk a lot to help move the gas out of your body (both in the abdomen from CO2 gas and in the intestinal tract).

Make sure you have plenty of Clear liquids on hand. You will also need those after surgery and possibly a few days before as well.

The main thing to wrap your head around is that this is not a cake walk. You will still have to work hard to lose the weight. The band will help you but you have to work with it and feed it the right things. The pre and post op diets especially take a lot of will power. You may occasionally get the "what have I done" feeling but it will pass. Just keep your eye focused on the prize and remember all the reasons you are making this step in your life and you will do fine!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
