Carbquick question

A few years ago I used to buy a product on-line called Carbquik. It's a low carb version of Bisquick type mix. It's made from flour but sort of like Splenda, they left out the bad stuff. Anyway, I'm thinking about ordering it again, but wanted to know if anyone has used it since being banded and if it causes the same "sticking" issues.

I have never heard of it. Just read the link and nutritional info. One serving is 60 calories but I can't find where it says how much a serving is.

Don't really want to add it to my diet now, but as I get closer to goal or on maintainence I would try it.

There are 27 servings in a 1 lb box. So, a little more than 1/2 oz. per serving?? I'm so not good at math. I think the pancakes were 3 pancakes per serving. Of course, I wouldn't be able to hold more than one now. But I was thinking of using whey Protein to replace the milk to boost the Protein.

When I low carbed I could use this and still lose weight as long as I kept my daily carbs under 60. So I'm thinking with the band AND low carb, I should REALLY do well. My dietician is big on low carb anyway.

Great math, but who measures powders by ounces for cooking? I guess I was looking for measurements like a 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup, so I could translate that into a receipe and try to figure some calories.

But powders are light so maybe that's a lot in one serving?????

A cup is 8 ounces. 1/4 cup is 2 ounces. So -- 1/16 cup. :mad: You can get even more precise measurements if you do it by tablespoons.

1 Tablespoon is .5 ounces. So. Use 1 Tablespoon per serving.

I know it worked well for me when I was low carbing, I wasn't counting fat or calories or anything but carbs. I just hate to buy the stuff if it's going to "stick." As I recall, the texture wasn't smooth like regular Bisquick, it had a lot of Fiber. I'm going to guess it would not ball up. I think I'll risk buying it again.

A cup of dry ingredients is different from a cup of wet ingredients. Example: A cup of bullets weighs more than a cup of corn flakes.

That's a dry ingredient so the cup measurement won't translate. I think you have to weigh the oz on a scale and pour it in a cup to see.

But I'm very intrigued about this product for occasional use. so I might try this product down the road.

I was never great in math, your numbers are right, but I think it's the dry/wet thing.

Well, it seems that math isn't the only thing I'm bad at... my husband reminded me that I had some in the cabinet that I bought about 6 months ago that had never been opened. Yeah, before I decided to look into surgery... So here's the skinny, I weighed a 1/2 oz and it's just about 1/4 cup of dry mix. This morning a made 1/2 of a recipe of the pancakes and cooked only 1 pancake. I make them a little thinner than the recipe (more like a crepe) and I added a little Splenda. Keep in mind this is not a product you can use with low fat or fat free products, it needs the fat to make it edible, without it... hmmm shall we say sawdust? But it is very low carb. So that being said here's what I made: 1 C Carbquik = 240 calories 1 egg = 80 1 Tbsp heavy cream = 50 4 T butter = 400 Water splenda Total calories =770 (yes, I see you all cringing) according to the box, that would be 5 servings (remember I cut the recipe in 1/2) And for ME this is 10 servings. So my pancake was 77 calories and about 1 carb. Yes I can see you guys whipping out your calculators and adding the fat grams. LOL I topped it with: 1 Tbsp cream cheese (whipped) 45 calories 1/4 C blueberries with spenda and Xanthan Gum warmed. 20 calories So my fabulous Breakfast was 142 calories + About 5 carbs. I subtract fiber. This time I didn't experiment with adding whey powder to boost the Protein, but I usually drink a couple of Protein Drinks per day to ensure I meet my protein requirements. I'm not trying to convince anyone else to come to the dark side LOL, but I've found that I can eat high fat items and loose weight. Now I didn't say I can live off high fat items alone. But at the end of the day I find that while my low carb diet isn't low fat, it really isn't high fat either because I'm eating less of everything, and that includes fat. I also find that if I eat regular (not low fat or fat free) products I'm satisfied longer. I think I now know the answer to my original question, I didn't have any "sticking" issues with the Carbquik, the fiber must take care of that. And it was a nice change of pace from my routine breakfast... usually an egg or low carb SlimFast. So for those who think they just can't live the rest of their lives without biscuits and gravy, well, now you have a low carb option, that might not stick. I'm getting a fill today, so I'll tell you in a few days if fill number 2 makes a difference. LOL I wouldn't consider it an everyday product... for one thing it's expensive, for another, who has the time?

Funny you should post this right now, as I was just searching online (everything is online) to find a converison table for dry ingredients from oz to cups, when I got the e-mail about a new post on the forum.

My husband likes crepes and I'll bet we could use sugar free jelly. Crepes can make an elegant dessert for company, too! He is also much more satisfied if a meal has some fat, that is less important to me.

Thanks for the info. Now I just have to compare the calories to a regular pancake, even tho I already know the carbs will be higher. LOL. We are obsessed with this stuff, huh?

Shortgal, My husband and I are both banded. With only 1 fill, I don't have a lot of sticking issues. But my husband, two years out does have problems with breads and he loves biscuits and gravy. I hadn't thought about this product for him until I thought about ME. Am I awful or what? So in our case, I wasn't so concerned about calories of this verses calories of that, but simply trying to find a bread-like product that will go down, of course low carb and high fiber are a huge plus. And knowing that we would only eat 1 biscuit I knew regardless, the calories would be lower than pre-band. LOL

How nice you have a "band buddy". It's got to make things easier.

Ha, I think about myself all the time in terms of food! My husband could stand to lose about 40 pounds, overweight, but not a lot. He does like high fat food, grew up with it as a kid. His mom made lots of fried food. My preference is carbs.

Jealous or angry are NOT the right words to describe my feelings when he eats things I can't, but I would like him to change some eating habits for his health. While I had the band, I did not have high blood pressure. He takes meds for HBP and cholesterol and I believe he's headed for diabetes (his mom had it) if he doesn't lose some weight. And I worry about his kidneys because of the medications he takes. His mom had a kidney removed.

I guess I feel I'm working on getting healthier and just wish he would, too.

I don't have good restriction yet, so I am using some willpower and for that reason, I'm not ready to let in too many carbs, since that's my weakness, I'm afraid I'll trigger a binge!

Okay, I had my "fill" on Wednesday.

This morning I ate a "Carbquik" pancake. It seems that the fiber does make it come apart when chewed. It didn't "gum up" or "stick." Also, I ate that around 6:00 a.m., it's 3 hours later and I'm still feeling quite satisfied.

I will definitely be using this product on my journey.

If anyone decides to order it, I will caution that the shipping is a killer, I learned I can order several boxes for about the same shipping cost as one. But I also know that most people will want to sample it before ordering several boxes, so that can be a Catch 22. The texture isn't quite what Bisquick is, but it doesn't have that off flavor that the soy products have.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
