Newbie with a question

Recommended Posts

I just discovered this board and I am already overwhelmed by the amount of information here.

I am seriously considering having a lapband done within the next 6 to 8 weeks. My question is this...since this is an outpatient procedure, can I return to work 3 days later or even a week later? I am a 4th grade teacher.

Thanks!

My sister and I had our bands done together during the summer, and since I have the summers off it wasn't an issue for me, but for my sister it was.

We had our surgery on a tuesday in Mexico and she returned to work that following monday (5 days later) with no problems.

another lady that I worked with (who is a 4th grade teacher) had her band on a thursday and took the following week off, she told me that she could have returned to work sooner. I personally felt fine after about 3-4 days after surgury, I was a little sore but nothing I couldn't take care of.

Just be prepared for what you are going to eat because of the post-surg. diet. Good luck with your band, best wishes for you.:)

Hi! Welcome to the site, yes there is A LOT of info here!

As for returning to work, I would give your self at least 4-5 days before going back. Will you also be staying in the hospital overnight? My surgery was considered outpatient, but I stayed overnight. The first few days are a bit tough as you will likely still be on some pain medication and you will be tired. I took off just over a week from work. My surgery was on a Wed and I took off the rest of that week and the whole next week. I probably could have gone back a week later, but wanted to enjoy my time recouperating and adjusting to the new band.

Everyone is different though so it is certainly possible to go back more quickly, but I would suggest making arrangements to allow yourself the opportunity not to go back if you are feeling like you need more time at home.

Thanks for the information. I am trying to arrange my procedure to be done the end of March when we will be out for Spring Break so I will have a week to recuperate before having to return to school.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
