I wonder if Ishould request a new surgery date?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for banding on 01/24/2008 (this coming Thursday). I have lost 7lbs, but I have NOT followed the liquid diet perfectly. I have cheated everyday. Today, I was the worst. I had solid food three times.

I do not want to cause post-op problems for myself, so I think I might need to reschedule the procedure.

Mind you, I was losing 1lb a day, albeit Water weight.

Does anyone have an opinion on this one? Has anyone gone through this?

My doctor didn't tell me to go on a pre op diet so I was out of control with my food intake prior to the op, even put on weight. I guess my liver was okay from the tests so didn't need it. You've lost 7 lbs so that should help. Talk to your doctor as he's the only one who knows what state your liver is in and whether you should go ahead with the op at this time.

Many people don't have a pre-op diet at all. My surgeon did not require a liquid diet. He only wanted no bread, no rice, no potatoes, no Pasta for 10 days prior. I actually cheated on that too, but my liver was okay. But I had already lost 50 pounds on regular dieting prior to getting the surgery so maybe my liver was already smaller anyway.

did your surgeon give you a specific amount of weight to lose? if she/he didn't, then you're probably ok.

my surgeon made me sign a contract that i would lose a specific amt of weight (20 lbs...high bmi), and told me that if i didn't lose it, my surgery would be postponed. even with some cheating, i made it.

I would talk with your surgeon. Every surgeon is different. I didn't have to do a liquid pre-op, I did a low carb Atkins like diet. I lost 20 lbs pre-op. It was HARD but I did it.

Check with your surgeon.

I didn't have to do a liquid diet at all. We were just supposed to try and lose weight to shrink our liver before the surgery, but it was just a goal. We didn't HAVE to make it. Just as long as we were trying. If I was you I would just be honest and check with them. It might not matter at all.

I originially posted the question of "I wonder if I should request a new surgery date" because I was struggling to follow the 14 day pre-op liquid requirement.

After reading all your postings, I contacted the surgery center. I spoke to the nurse that is in charge of these things. She told me to start where I am with following the liquid requirement. I am 2 days pre-op so I think I can handle that request. I am doing more broths now. They seem to satisfy the hunger a bit more than I had expected. I think it is the seasonings, or something.

Also, she did tell me that they had to reject a person that showed up for surgery yesterday because she had food on her stomach.

With that said, I know that I will follow the liquids for these final 2 days.

Wish me luck on Thursday, 01/24/2008! I am a little nervous about the unknown...like will I be able to feel the band?...will I accidentally overeat and vomit on a regular basis?...can I really have the same great success that so many of you seem to have?...can I really get my portion sizes down so that I can successfully lose this 100+ pounds?

I just have to rely on my faith and press forward. I know that God will hold my hand through both the procedure and as I walk after the procedure as a "banded" person.

Yes, please let us know how you are doing! And YES, you can totally do it! There was a part of me that really wondered whether this band would work for me because I really was hungry ALL the time. But it does! I have really not been hungry at all, I even had to "remind" my self to eat the other day, that NEVER happened before!

Keep the faith and know you are doing what is best for you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
