Congratulations on your success! Your photos are amazing! Any special tips you'd share? How long did the weight loss take? Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi, thanks. It took me a bit over a year, about 15 months. I work my butt off. I count calories, I eat about 800-1300 a day. I only eat about 1 cup or less at a time, even if I want more. I work out for about 1.5 hours a day at 4 am. I think the tip is to committ 110% a do whatever your bodies needs to loose! :) I hope that helps!

I'm still waiting on insurance approval (BCBS). It's going on the 5th week so I'm hoping it will be soon!!!!! Once it comes back, I should be able to get a surgery date ASAP. Carrie, in the office, told me on Wednesday that they are scheduling for mid-March right now and that would work well for me so I'm hoping. Let me know once you get your date; we may end up in the same pre-op group.

That would be great to be in the same group:cool: I will definitely let you know.

Hey apeters, that's fantastic news! I just yesterday had my medical intake and on the 27th I meet Dr. Y, then they'll schedule me. So long story longer, I have no idea when.

How do you feel about doing 4 weeks of Optifast? I'm excited and nervous wondering too if I'll cheat and chew food.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, this will be the 3rd Optifast program I have done so I definitely know what to expect - except for the surgery in the middle of the program, of course! My personality has worked really well with this kind of diet, it is so clear-cut, it is easy for me to follow. It's when the choices are provided that I get into trouble.

Just found out I'll be having surgery on April 28th. How did you 4 week Optifast go and more importantly, how did your surgery go?

The 4 week Optifast pre-op went fine, I lost about 15 pounds before surgery so that was nice. The surgery went well; I did stay an extra night because I had a few anesthesia-related side effects. No biggie, they just wouldn't let me leave till everything was ok. My roommate, also from SWMC, had lapband surgery an hour after me and she did great. She was ready to go home the next morning. I think it's such an individual thing; the care at Sparrow was phenomenal, can't say enough about their great staff. Just to keep my stress level up, though, I did have a last minute phone call from SWMC (30 minutes before leaving for the hospital) about an insurance issue. My only advice is to make sure everything is lined up before the day of; I couldn't believe it and had to just deep breathe and let it go to re-prepare for the surgery.

Congratulations on your date! When do you start the pre-op diet?

I start the pre-op on Thursday April 3rd, then have to go to the group meetings every Thursday in April. I guess I'm only doing 3.5 weeks of pre-op diet, so I won't complain! Congratulations on the 15 lbs! That's excellent news. Did you cheat AT ALL while on Optifast? Did you do 'one last meal'?

I'm getting banded at 10am. what time were you banded? If in the morning like me, how soon beforehand did you have to be at sparrow?

I'm sorry for all the questions, I don't go to SWMC until next week and hopefully then I'll remember my questions for them. lol

No, I understand the excitement and the questions. Been there! My surgery was scheduled for 1:30 and I had to be there at 10:30. I think 3 hours is standard. The time goes fairly quick though because there is a lot of action going on. The care at Sparrow was phenomenal, I think you will be pleased!

I did not cheat on Optifast but I'm such a rule follower, not in my nature. Not always a good thing. I didn't have a last meal, per se, but I did plan a week or so of my favorite meals, in reasonable quantities, just so I'd feel like I had a last chance to enjoy before the 5-6 weeks of limited options. I didn't gain any weight that week so I must have kept it reasonable. :sneaky:

I'll be at Sparrow tomorrow (and for the next 3 weeks)for the post-op class so we'll be in separate classrooms but we're all out in the waiting room together. If you hear my name, Anita, please say hello.

Take care!

Did you have just one overnight stay at Sparrow? How long were you off work? And, last question, why do you have to be at Sparrow on Thursdays?

sorry for all the questions.

Sorry for the confusion in my answer. I meant that I'd be at the SWMC on Thursday. I had 2 overnights after the surgery but that was due to my issues with the anesthesia. My roommate, also from SWMC, left the next morning, no issues. It was just me. :) Best to you as you begin the process....

I'm at SWMC, and my surgery is on 4/28. After reading some of these posts, I'm going to double-check next week that everything is set with the insurance.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
