I need a port question answered- I feel dumb for asking.

Recommended Posts

I have been banded since October 3rd, and everything has been rolling along smoothly...until recently. Last week I went snow shoeing and the next day my port area was bugging me. It felt like a dull ache; kind of like I had pulled something. It went away after a few days and I forgot about it. A few days ago the pain came back but it was a lot worse, and when I touched my port area it felt like my port was bulging out from under my skin. I have to admit that I really never touched my port before; I figured that if I just let it do it's thing we would get along just fine without getting too personal. I hate the idea of having to touch something foreign in my body. However due to the pain that I am in I have now been forced to explore my port and it feels like there is a big round lump under my skin. Is it suppose to be flat on top, or is it suppose to be round? I know this is so sad that I have to even ask this question, because I should know how it is suppose to feel! If anyone can shed some light on this I would sleep better tonigiht. Is it normal to have a dull ache around your port? I know my doctor did not stitch it down, so I can move it a bit with my fingers (side-to-side.)

Sounds pretty normal to me. But I do know it is a kinda weird to finally feel your port. Sounds like you just did alittle to much and made your port sore. It takes a while for the port to heal. I was banded in April 2007 and mine has just now got to the point to were it is not sore all the time. But to be on the safe side I would call the Dr. Hope this makes you feel better!!!!!!!!!!

I was banded in Nov 06 and agree that it took a while for me not to notice the port. I can now feel it only if I try or if I am laying on my stomach.

Did you say that your doctor didn't stitch the port in place? I thought this was done routinely...did he indicate why he didn't do this? It seems that would lead to a higher rate of flip or movement. Hmm...that it just an assumption on my part, I wonder what is the benefits on either side?

Sorry...I think I have ADD sometimes...at any rate, I agree that you should call your doctor to be on the safe side but think you will happily find that you are normal.

God Bless!

I called my doctor today and I have an appointment for Thursday. I have to admit that my port area does feel better today. I guess I had a weird phobia about "something" sitting so close to my skin. I talked to the nurse today on the phone and told her about my phobia and she chucked at me. I guess that is why I pay my doctor...he will be able to tell me if my port is where it should be. Then I will have a point of reference.

Why would he not stitch it in place?!?!

It sounds like you over worked your abdominal muscles. I've done the same thing working out. My port is still a little tender sometimes.

I'm the opposite ... from day 1 I've been poking at and playing with mine - lol!

Let us know how it goes.<O:p</O:p

I have never had any pain around mine. I didn't even know where it was until my 4 week check up when I asked. He said it was stitched in place in the muscle. It just never hurt .

I got mine a week ago tomorrow and I'm like Amy, I think I'm happy not knowing exactly where mine is. I can't bring myself to feel for it. I do have a lot of soreness in the are where I believe it is though. I sure hope that lets up soon.

I went to see my doctor today and he said that my port has moved, but it is nothing to worry about. My port is not stitched to my muscle, and he feels that by not stitching it the port needs little to no repair. (He has never had to repair a flipped port.) He moved it back into place and everything was status-quo I guess. He did show me what an actual port looks like, and it wasn't so bad, but I am still not poking at it. Let's just say that me and my port are going to have a long distance relationship if it is possible. I am just happy everything is marvy. WHEW!

I was banded in may 2006 and I still have that problem especially when I use high pants so when I bend, the port seem to be touched by the pant and it hurt, sometimes I feel like an electrical shock, but it is normal:wink2:

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
