That I want to do the diet and not cheat but im afraid the hunger is going to get the best of me. Im trying mind over matter but its not helping much. I wouldn't mind the liquid part thats fine its just that im not getting full and i just drank like 40 oz of Water and thats not helping either. So if anyone has a suggestion it would be very helpful thanks :rolleyes

I'd say increase your Protein. It's better than cheating and eating a bunch of carbs. It gets better after a few days, but I have felt somewhat hungry virtually the entire time. You just have to stay on top of it and avoid getting to the point where you're ravenous and lose control. Hang in there and remember lots of others are going through the same thing. You are not alone!

Gillian, you would have to go back and refer to the post-surgery diet given you by your doctor.

My doctor has me on 6 sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks with added Protein powder. In addition I can have chicken broth, sugar free ice pops, sugar free hard candy (NO CHOCOLATE), hot tea, sugar free hot chocolate with added Protein, sugar free drinks such as lemonade and Fruit Drinks, iced tea, and sugar free Italian Ice.

I am eating something every two hours and I keep a drink at hand all of the time.

I am feeling great and not experiencing any hunger.

If you are not certain about what you can have call your doctor and ask.

Keep your goal in front of you and you won't want to cheat.

Hugs and best wishes,

~~ D ~~

Gilliebean, hi!

I found that I felt hungrier as the days go by - I am now on Day 11. I had to make some adjustments to how & when I consume food & drink etc and discovered that by spreading out the Optifast, the salads/green vegies that we are allowed, the jelly and the small amount of fruit we can have, in addition to drinking mucho Water and several cups of jasmine flavored green tea that I can not feel so badly hungry but I have now found myself obsessing about food - even dreamed yesterday that I ate so much chocolate and cashew nuts that the doctor refused to operate!!

I also make sure that I drink a large amount of Water just before and after I have eaten anything. I am not usually a soft drink or cordial person, but just to give myself some variety I went and got some diet coke and diet flavoured cordial drinks too.

Oh and in the evening, I make my salad or vegie concoction - copious amounts as my dietitian said eat enough to fill you, then have some of the jelly or my fruit and I only make up the last Optifast milk shake to sip at in bed while I read a chapter of my book, and that way I am not waking up really hungry in the night.

This seems to have worked for me so I hope it is of some help to you.:nervous

You other guys that are on Optifast can eat other things besides the optifast. I was told i could only have four shakes and One Bar a day that equals about 800 calories. It really stinks I am miserable and im crying.. Its like I told my husband its like putting a crack head in a crack house and telling them not to touch. It really stinks Ok im done ranting I think sorry.:cry

Hi---I'm on day 5 and can have 4 shakes and 2 bars of the Optifast. You can also have sugar free drinks, Jello, popsicles too, right? Today I woke up starving and it is starting to feel like a LONG haul to the 15th. This probably sounds lame, but it does help if you can get out and do something, or even if you knit, etc. I admit to a cheat, and that is some 1/2 and 1/2 in a big cup of tea--the warm liquid is very filling to me. hang in there--you are losing weight now and it will feel great to have that extra loss to start off with.

They didnt tell me i could have anything else besides the two Soups, two shakes and One Bar. I know i can do it, its just a pain in the butt. I wouldn't be bothered if i couldn't feel my hunger hinse why i need surgery lol. I had a major break down earlier but i got threw it and didn't cheat. I feel like a dope cause i haven't read about anyone else having break downs you know. Well i guess if someone else is having them and just not owning up atleast they will know they are not alone. I hope this is making since.

Trust me you are not the only one that has had a breakdown. I'm not on Optifast but I'm on Atkins and I feel like I can barely do it. It is so frustrating because I really want to be strong and go through this with no problems. I know the band is just a tool for weight loss and I feel that if I can't even do this then what am I doing getting the band. I hope everything gets better!

Gillian - I'm on the Opti Fast too. My surgery is tomorrow. It will get better I promise. The first four days were hell for me, but now I'm fine. I mix the Protein Shakes with skim milk (instead of water) and add ice to make it like a milk shake. Honestly it isn't bad. Hang in there sister!!!

My Dr also does a low carb diet. I have started a week early so I can check with the dietitian that I am doing everything right.

Gillian,

I am on day 7 of the shakes, surgery is on the 16th. The first 3 days was the hardest, it gets easier sister!!! I found that I just had to get out of the house and away from the fridge. I put my shakes on the top two shelves of the fridge so when I would stop by, just to browse, I would see them and remember what I was doing. I have really become aware the last week how much I graze in the kitchen, like when I get up to use the restroom, I graze, when I answer the phone, when the dogs bark, on commercial breaks, or just being bored. I fooled myself into thinking I didn't eat that much, I don't have large portions for meals but it is all the in-between that has added up. Hang in there, you'll do fine, the shakes are only temporary, we will get through this, just stay busy and keep your goals in mind, best wishes, Pike

Days 5-7 were rough for me, but I was allowed to have broth, and veggies, in addition to the Protein shakes, ice pops and Jello. That broke things up.

I cannot say enough about the high Protein, 45g, 0g fat, 300 calorie smoothies I had from local smoothie place here. I am surey they are all over the place, smoothie King. My nutritionist allowed me one a day. It held my hunger for almost 6 hours.

I would contact the nutritionist, sometimes the doctors don't get too involved in diet.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
