fears post-op question

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I wanted to ask what were your fears post-op? How did you deal with the post-op worries. Were the fear/worries a reality after being banned? I.E. Not being able to deal with the head hunger.....Amount of food..can I live on 1200 cal. a day? How would I feel...sick...good...PBing?

Any info is good info......I am on my last stage and will be submitted for approval this week. I am just corious what your experience was like.

Thanks for taking the time to read/respond.

Be well,

Michael (Fish)

I can only speak for myself and i had no fear whatsoever. I did my research and the biggest thing to do is to make sure after your surgery WALK!!! That is the one thing that made it so there was practically no pain. I didnt even take vicoden or anything just walked. Anything else dont hesitate to ask.

Post op fear none - Happy - I finally would have a tool to help me control my portions.. I eat anywhere between 1000 to 1200 calories daily you are a guy so you are going to lose fasters than us women and I bet you can consume more calories too.

My only advice - is know that this is only a tool - just cuz you are banded doesn't me you are going to lose weight without working (healthy food choices & excercise) IMHO 75% of the work is up to you and the other 25% will be the band once you have proper restriction

Follow YOUR doctors eating plan - you will want food at time - but you will just have to mustard thru it - the benefits of losing weight far out weight the momentary satisfaction of eating.

Head hunger - is our biggest problem - they band our tummy not our brains - just find ways to distract yourself. We are use to comforting ourselves with food - now you can't you will have some issues - but you can work thru them with the knowledge that this too shall pass.

This board is a termendous (sp) help - you will find so much support here - read read ask questions.

I had surgery on Tues and was back to work on the following Monday (desk job) - port site hurt the most and longest (about 2 week for me) but by day 3 I was feeling pretty good - For me surgery hurt - but they give you great pain meds - I never took any pain meds after I got home (spent 1 night in the hospital) - Gas in your shoulder is the most problmatic - gas x strips are great..

Good Luck on your journey...

I was scared that I would blow it and over eat or that I wouldn't be able to eat and would drink my calories. It is much easier than I thought it would be. I have a good attitude and I am being carefull and eating much less than I think I could at this point. I could eat what ever I wanted before my 1st fill and I did at Christmas. I got my first fill on 12/27 and the head hunger was bad but I got over it quickly and now everything is great. I am eating small amounts of food and I am satisfied. Don't get wrong, I still think about all that food that I won't let myself eat but I can handle it. I was so afraid that I wouldn't be able to cope.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
