Hello.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on the 10th of December, (9 days ago) and my stomach has been tolerating everything quite well. I’m just very sick of drinking Protein Shakes and can’t down them anymore. Would it be bad to start the puree stage a few days early?

thanks!!

I noticed a lot of people (on tiktok etc) posting about their bariatric experiences were able to move onto puree stage after 7 days? Most were from the USA or UK but the company I’m with is only liquids for 2 weeks, do you know why is that?

Plans can be different but the best advice is always to follow your surgeon’s plan (& never what someone on Facebook or TikTok advises who often post just for attention & shock value). The staged return to eating solid food is there to support your healing & protect your healing tummy. Remember all those staples & sutures holding your digestive system together. (Read there can be up to 10 inches of sutures - imagine that on your arm or leg 😱.) There are also many nerves cut so you can’t really tell if you are doing damage or not. It takes about 8 weeks for your tummy to fully heal post surgery.

Yes the shakes can be hideous, I made myself have one a day then drank Soups - comsummes, broths, creams (thin them with additional Water or milk as you need & ensure they have no solid matter). Bone broths are excellent too. Blend yoghurt with milk to make a drink or make your own Protein Shakes using Protein Powder. It’s only two weeks & you’ll get through it. Many of us actually find purée stage more challenging from a texture & flavour perspective. Protein water is an option too. Gotta work at getting at least close to your daily protein goals.

you should reach out to the office about this; as they might suggest Protein waters like Isopure or something else that has protein in it.. like SEET protein. You can search on Amazon for protein waters but I would call the office and let them know you’re struggling to keep down shakes

I had my surgery December 6 and really need to be mindful because my body can tolerate almost anything. I have had sweets and am already disappointed in myself . I wish I followed the Bariatric book and stages better.

Hello! I had my surgery on the 11th so we’re not far apart! I won’t lie I didn’t last long on the liquid diet I kind of went on to puree around day 8 post op. I don’t think many people are as honest. I cheated and so what. I’m so glad for the surgery and I wish many more losses for the both of us whether it be fast or slow! Weight loss is weight loss !!!

I am about 11 weeks out from surgery, and i was told that everyone's body is different. And that everyone has different tolerations. Like you, i knew other people that had the prodecure with other physician groups, and they were able to move to other stages more quickly. I know for myself i did cut a few days (i think 2 -3) moving to that pureed stage. And i did handle it well. But not everyone does. I do think those are guidelines, and to trust and know your body, and just be cautious. And if anything doesn't feel right, revert back to the documented plan from your nutritionist. It seems most people have had success by reaching out to them and asking them their questions also.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
