Solid foods - did I eat too much?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So my guidance from dieticians say to just use a small tea plate for food now and stop eating after 20mins. Very vague to me as some meals I can clean the plate but others I get full quickly.

Mostly I've been fine with this and feel full before it's finished but today I had two small tortilla wraps with chicken & veg inside ... Before surgery I'd have six or more!

I'm just over 7 weeks out, is two wraps too much? I felt no pain and took my time, I just don't want to stretch the stomach unknowingly.

I assumed it was fine as if I took the wraps apart it wouldn't fill a tea plate.

Just looking for some reassurance!

P.s. I usually use lettuce leaves as a wrap but fancied a change

My surgeon said to not eat more than 3.5oz of food so I always weigh my food when I’m at home.
If I do eat too much I’m miserable & have the through up sometimes.
I’m almost 5 years out.

Every dr seems to have different rules. At 2 months out my dr wanted me to eat 800-900 calories and to not skip carbs. I would think that what you ate was fine and seems to fit your teams advice. Take care!

Ask for some portion size &/or calorie goal guidance from your dietician. I was told 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to a cup at goal (6months) but no calorie goals.

All plans are different but I wasn’t allowed any bread or similar products so wraps weren't allowed. Plus too filling in your small tummy. Remember eat your Protein first then your vegetables and finally any allowed carbs if you are able.

It seems like every doctor is different. Mine told me 4 ounces and to try to take 30 minutes to eat (put your fork down between bites, chew 20-25 times, etc).

Mine kind of mumbled something similar to what@Arabesque said about portion size. Start off with 1/4 to 1/3 cup and work up to 1 cup, and stay at around 1 cup forever. He was pretty vague about it too. The progression came natural to me since our stomachs do expand a little as time goes on. I usually weigh my food (in grams) instead of measuring volume though. There are some foods that I do go on over the 1 cup rule, like lettuce, or watermelon due to the high Water content, for example.

Completely normal. food varies in density and Water content. A cup of berries is going to sit differently in the stomach than a cup of cut up steak.

Thanks all for the replies. I calmed down a bit and just accepted that I listened to my tummy and I shouldn't panic!

Generally I can't tolerate much carbs at all as they bloat me so it's not a regular occurrence, I get full before I'm finished and I'm listening to that signal now (hit or miss sometimes but I'm still learning!)

Thanks for the reassurance

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
