What do you wish you would have known more about before WLS?

Recommended Posts

Loose skin. It took me 4 years to reach goal after adopting intermittent fasting and now I am trying to decide if I want any plastics. Seems kind of silly at my age (65) to spend the $$ and it really does not bother me too much (just no sleeveless tops or shorts and Spanx). I have retired and would rather spend the money on travel...

i love that i had my surgery. it has changed my life exponentially for the better in more ways than a hundred. i have ZERO regrets having it and would not change any aspect of it that i endured (both good AND bad) because that road got me to where i am today.

anything i did not know beforehand and/or had to learn or be surprised by during the actual process were non-issues in the grand scheme of things. just teaching moments really. sometimes i think its better to internalize a lesson when you when you find out the consequences of being on the other side of it, vs just being TOLD.

BUT.

i will say i do wish i had known 5-6 years earlier than when i first started looking into WLS that i would have qualified for it at a BMI of 35 with 2 co-morbidities. Instead i had waited until i got to BMI 40, because i did not know about the lower qualification. But whatevs. Better late than never!

If you had it to do all over again what would you say was missing in your weight loss surgery experience thus far? Length experience doesn’t matter.

All possible side effects besides weight-loss. That can be detrimental to your health. (Reality ) 💕.

I wish I had realized that if I had pain or needed an in office procedure or whatever that drs would not just rx me pain meds like I was led to believe. I had back pain and had two procedures requiring NSAIDS and was basically left to tough them both out because I could not take them and they felt that rx pain meds were not warranted even though I told them my medical history. I even had a doctor ask me to leave his practice after I was telling him I was concerned about future pain management. I think he thought I had an addiction but I was really just in pain and scared because they weren’t helping me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
