Struggling with diarrhea

Recommended Posts

I am 7 days post-op, had several problems. My gastric bypass went well, but the found a hiatal hernia and liver problems, on top of that the gas didn't dissipate as normal it went into my face, neck, chest, heart and lung. Ended up with a partially collapsed lung and needed a chest tube. I'm on a ton of meds that have to be crushed and taken every 6 hours. I can't stomach anything but Water and I apologize for the gross details but now I'm struggling with horrible diarrhea.

I just want to feel better, has anyone run into this problem.

Oh man, sorry for all of your hiccups! I am glad they are getting your fixed up and I hope you feel better soon.

As far as the diarrhea, I had it bad for a week or so after surgery also. As soon as I drank or "ate" anything but Water I would be in the bathroom within minutes. It did pass and now I am more regular than ever.

I wish you the best!

I was surprised by the exhaustion. It lasted until week 4. Stopped once I got to soft foods. Finally getting food- calories for energy. Be kind to yourself as you are healing. Don't plan much in the first few weeks. If grocery shopping grab a few prioritized things and go home. I did too much walking the store and when I went to checkout could barely stand. Twice I almost left my cart of groceries to go home.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
