Dumping or lactose intolerance?

Recommended Posts

I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based Protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?

Mmm maybe? How much Protein was there? Since you are on soft foods maybe you can narrow things down by trying a low sugar low fat Greek yogurt. ( on second thought, stick to doctors orders) There’s various degrees of lactose intolerance too. It could even be your body reacting to soft foods vs. liquids. I have found that the dumping can be lessened or controlled with mild exercise and combining with protein.

I probably wouldn’t be testing too much, your body is still deeply healing. As always you should talk with your team if you aren’t sure. They see more people and know what to look for, and what to avoid or enhance.

About 9 grams of protein. I’ve had other milk based things and it seems to be hot or miss. Milk drinks make me nauseous but yogurt and cottage cheese has been fine. It was just odd given the short period and ingredients.

Milk always caused me problems but never yoghurt too. It’s because the bacteria used to make yoghurt reduces much of the lactose & therefore fewer or no side effects & cottage cheese has less lactose so you may be able to eat more without it affecting you.

Try switching out your milk for a lactose free or non dairy version & same with other higher lactose products & see if that helps. Also, if you still have shakes try a plant Protein Powder instead. For many the difficulty with lactose is only temporary. If this is your problem I hope it’s temporary for you too.

It sounds like this is a lactose issue. cheese iso very low in lactose and yohurt has bacteria to support the digestions, so it often poses little or no problem. After surgery you may also consider general IBS issues, if you experienced ay of these after surgery also, could be causing some issues. The good old food diary is key to track everything. Good luck

Seems more of a lactose issue than dumping. Protein Shakes are very low sugars and fats to cause dumping, although nothing is impossible.

Also, you don't really get into your symptoms. With dumping you usually get hot like flashes, sweaty, racing heart, and sick.

Try dairy free Protein shakes and see how you do.

Good luck, you got this!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
