Day of Surgery Concerns

Hi all. I have a couple questions about surgery. Are you completely naked during surgery? And also I am estimated to have my period on the exact date of my surgery which is 1/10. I was wondering how that goes. I am a shy person so I worry about these things. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you

With all sugeries the only part that will be exposed is the area they are actually doing the incision on. Everything else is covered in sterile drapes. I would ask your surgical team about your period. You cant be the only woman who has had your period when you have surgery. I'm sure it will be no big deal. Good Luck with your surgery. You will have a gown on when you fall asleep and when you wake up. Then someone will prepare you for the surgery and as mentioned they cover you except for the area they are going to be operating on.

in terms of your period I have heard quite a few women who have it on surgery day. I have heard of sterile panties worn with a pad that they give you.

when i got the hospital i go to the surgery prep room where you will be in your own little area with curtains blocking the view (or maybe a private room idk how your hospital does it) and there i had to take off all my clothing including underwear. I then had to use some special wipes to wipe down my whole body, Then I was told to put on a hospital gown which ties off in the back. with that you will wear all the way thru surgery. They will take it off you in the OR when you are put to sleep and redress you. Just remember. You probably will never see most of the hospital staff ever again except for your surgeon and maybe his assistant. and these hospital people see naked people all day long so its nothing to worry about. as for the other issue i wont comment on that since i am a dude lol Good luck with your surgery. It will be over before you know it.

Thank you for the reply. I have never had any surgeries so I feel very uncomfortable with the idea of having surgery but sounds like I will be out of it so I won't have to worry about it. Thank you.

Don’t forget those very unsexy, badly fitting, disposable bloomers they give you to wear under the gown. 😁

Give your surgeon’s office a call or the hospital & ask what the process is if you’ll likely have your period when you have your surgery. It’s a pretty common thing plus any stress you’re feeling about the surgery may bring your period on early too.

At my place they offered some underwear bc a nurse saw a pad I took just in case mine started. Its the same material has the blue hairnets they have lol

& dont worry about being naked! not only do they give you a gown, but the give you the giant sized ones that fit like a banket. You will feel more than okay

as others have said, you'll be covered except for the areas they'll be working on (i.e., your upper torso), but even if they weren't, they're doctors. Doctors see naked people all day every day and don't think anything about it.

Just to add a touch of humor to ease any stress you may feel about this, here's something from when I had a breast duct excision a few months prior to my RNY.

I was completely stripped down, in my gown and of course the ugly hospital socks. I was knocked out pretty quickly and the first thing I remember when Ii came to in the recovery room was the nurse telling me that when it's time to get dressed, I don't need to put on my bra because they put one on me (it was a compression type thing and pink). Sure enough there it was and the first words out of my mouth were "that's a nice trick wrestling me into a bra".

My mother had a mastectomy a few months ago, I was in the recovery room when she woke up. The nurse told her she would feel pressure on her chest because they put her in a mastectomy compression bra... my mom's (without missing a beat) says.. "I knew I was getting the feels while I was out... I just don't know if I liked it. I think my missing boob is going to be jealous now"...LOL!

The nurse thought it was funny, I just shook my head...

I didnt get those. I have had a lot of surgerys over the years so i lost my fear of exposure though. I just say sorry im gonna blind you and carry on.

As a former pre-op nurse this is what I would do (I’ve also had my period during a cardiac procedure): don’t use tampons, cup etc day of surgery, when you get into the pre-op area let the nurse getting you ready know you have your period. They can pad your bed and provide with pad/disposable panties. With surgery they want to know things like this as it is something to watch for in case they need to do a catheter or any other care. You want to let them know it’s not new bleeding. Keep in mind it might embarrass you but it happens often.

When they told me I had to be completely naked under my gown, I asked if they had any disposable underwear and they gave me a pair and said they would cut them off when needed (catheter if the surgery was long). I asked if they can replace them with a shield before I wake up, and they did.
