I’m freaking out!! I progressed to my phase 2 diet on Tuesday…. And I thought I knew exactly what I was doing, but I just checked my paperwork and I ate things I wasn’t supposed to introduce yet!!! I ate tuna salad, & mahi-mahi… both were chopped very small and I chewed really well but I’m still worried I did something wrong. **Neither of these things made me feel bad at all.**

Should I call my surgeons office tomorrow? Or just continue and not eat it again?

I don't know what your phase 2 diet is, as post op diets and progressions vary all over the map, but things like tuna salad and flakey fish were on our initial diet out of the hospital, so it is unlikely to have done any harm if you aren't feeling anything bad going on. We had a lot of freedom to move between liquids, mushies and soft things at will that first month, with the general rule being to try things one at a time to test for tolerance and if something didn't settle right, then skip that for a couple weeks and try it again. Some programs, on the other hand, are very cookie cutter and hold everyone back to the lowest common denominator so that no one has a "bad" experience, other than being on a liquid diet a lot longer than necessary for them.

If you aren't feeling bad, I wouldn't bother calling, but I would 'fess up to the doc when you see them next, let them know that you goofed and didn't feel bad, and didn't do it again. This is feedback that they can use, as often they don't really know how fast they can progress their diets - I have seen some come through here saying that their doc advanced them ahead of the published schedule, and when asked why, they were told that they had found patients cheating on the diet and not suffering from it, so they advanced the progression, and the guidebook will be updated next time they print some.

If it were me, I keep the doctor in the loop (but no need for urgency), but if you're feeling fine, I wouldn't worry.

My program (an ASMBS Center of Excellence) seems to be around middle of the pack in terms of advice caution. Some out there are super conservative and would have me still on clear broth 6 days post-op, and there are more lenient ones that allow things I can't have at all (no tomato-based anything for months) or introduce solid consistency far earlier (I get soft tofu and scrambled eggs at 2 weeks post-op).

I was going to warn you as I usually do with others who go off plan so early on but I had recently read a few responses that many were allowed soft foods right out of surgery so I think you are ok. I wasn't allowed any soft foods, only liquid with both my surgeries (VSG and RNY) for a week or more, but apparently others say their surgeons are ok with it so I think you will be ok. Just don't eat hard to digest foods or you may end up like my friend who got very ill a week after her VSG because she ate meat. Only reason I speak up about it all the time.

I have been approved for “mushy” food, which several plans allow for tuna salad and soft fish, but my plan does not. I didn’t realize until after I ate it that it’s not on my plan. I certainly didn’t go off plan intentionally, but it won’t happen again!

I would try not to worry too much. I misinterpreted my instructions and ate Pasta sooner than I was supposed to and of course it could have caused and issue but it didn’t. You may want to call your team to just ask what to watch for In terms of if you did do any damage but what’s done is done. Obviously don’t risk it again but try to relax cause freaking out won’t help anything.

So strange it isn't on your list then. My soft foods included all fish as long as it was mushy. tuna salad with mayo is always mushy to me hehe. Either way, I think you're good.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
