Nobody ever told me anything regarding coffee, so I just kept on with what I was doing. I drank coffee up to the day before surgery, and I had coffee three days post surgery. I’m currently almost 2 years out and I drink a ton of coffee every day, and I have never had any issues whatsoever. Interestingly enough I just had a pretty big plastic surgery operation less than a week ago, and my anesthesiologist asked me to have black coffee the morning of my afternoon surgery since she said she hates to have people have caffeine headaches post surgery, and there is absolutely no medical reason to not drink it. So there’s that as well.

Had surgery Monday and my coffee does not taste the same, it Decaf. And Jello tastes bad. But that’s all ok with me. Wonder while I progress what other foods will change for me? So e en if you can have coffee you may not like it anymore?

I’m actually 4 weeks post op with my surgery and prior to the surgery like 4 months prior, I was told NO caffeine whatsoever. I know from experience coffee can cause ulcers and it’s an irritant to the stomach. I know this from experience and I’m also a nurse very in tune with gastroenterology. I didn’t stop drinking until I was 1 day pre-op. After the surgery , I drank whatever agreed with my stomach. Remember everything is a mental game. Your brain tells you; you can’t go without caffeine but you can. It’s not easy finding the best Decaf and sometimes drinks you had before just taste weird. If your doctor told you to keep drinking coffee, I’d ask the possibility of it being an irritant and see if it’s a risk worth taking or just enjoy your cup of coffee peacefully!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
