Hi! Im not really sure about too much these last few weeks, other than the fact that im having surgery in under 14 days. Let me start back a little bit though. I am 19 and weigh about 290 pounds, but carry it very well. Most people doubt that I am 100+ pounds overweight with GERD being my only health issue. Just to let you know, I have BCBS-FED in Oklahoma. Anyways, the day before Thanksgiving I attended a lap-band seminar. Two days later I received a call asking me to set up an initial consult which resulted in me setting a surgery date for the 27th of December. And now that I have my psych, dietician, and tests all done I only have to do is wait it out. I guess I am shocked that everything is moving so fast. Does this normally happen? I could maybe understand if I was extremely overweight and have several co-morbidities, but i dont. This all just seems too easy. All I can say is that I am shocked.

My-

I have to say that this seems to be almost the same thing that happened to me. I went in to see Dr. Minkin (Des Peres, MO) in Late May, just to discuss the probability of me having surgery. By Mid June I was told that if I were to be a self pay, he could do the surgery as soon as July 5. I am a self pay and I had to wait a few weeks for my Short Term Disability to kick in at work, but I ended up having surgery July 25, 2007. If you are a healthier but still obese candidate, I think it might help. I started out at 282 and my ideal is 142 so I was 140 over. I carry mine well too and was told that I didn't look as heavy so therefore the "Roen Y" docs weren't as recieving when I talked with them. I think because the "Band" takes more work and will power, the doctors are more willing to go ahead faster after all of the testing and phsych evals.

Hope this helps you out and GOOD LUCK. Your taking an amazing step toward the best decision (in my opinion) that you could ever make for yourself. Congratulations!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
