New Band Update (REALIZE)

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to have my Realize Band placed on Feb 5th. My doctor is also a proctor. He pretty much agrees with you Dr Watkins, they are very similar, there are slight differences in the placement, and the only thing that i will notice is the very cool website. He did say that they loo different on X-ray, but hey how would I know what I'm looking at. And really do I want to look at it, as long as it is working the way it is supposed to work, I'll be a happy camper.

The website has a tracker, a journal with photo feature, a forum that other Realize patients can chat, you can set goals, link to your Dr and all kinds of good stuff.

OK, I'm done.

Patti

The REALIZE mySuccess website if pretty remarkable. I suspect that Allergan (Inamed) will be close behind with theirs.

Apparently, you can try out the mySuccess website with a pre-op code. We helped create the content and have reviewed it many times but I've never tried to access it as a pre-op patient. I think you would do this through www.realizeband.com

NukeChik, my doctor is probably about as cautious as they get. Both he and the hospital's dietitian gave me the same instructions. I'm guessing that the Realize band allows for quicker healing and transition.

We have the same doc and he's definitely changed his program. I got the AP band in August and it was 2 days Clear Liquids, 2 weeks full liquids, and 3 weeks of mushies!

The REALIZE port is less prominent and bigger around.

Do you think that will affect fills that aren't done under fluoro?

I ask because I know my doctor doesn't use fluoro (unless he’s changed that too) and I wonder if the port will be harder for them to hit.

When using fluoro the port should be very simple to "hit".

With fluoro, it's like walking up to a dart board and sticking the dart in the bullseye.

My question was about doctors that DON'T do fills under fluoro.

Ah. Sorry I missed that.

I find it a little bit harder to find the REALIZE ports.

It is a bit flatter and the access is a bit softer whereas the Allergan ports are easier to palpate and give you kind of a "thunk" when you hit it. The good news is that the REALIZE ports are flatter (potentially less prominent at goal weight) and the tubing is farther away from the septum so potentially less likely to get accidentally stuck with the adjusting needle.

hope that helps

I have the Realize band--was placed 12/28 and I had my first fill last week. The frustrating part is that the MySuccess program is ONLY offered to people who had their bands done in the US. I think this is very short sighted. And considering the people who give testimonials on the Realize band site are patients of Dr. R. in Monterrey--and he is a proctor for J & J, it just doesn't seem right.

What I can tell you about the Realize band is that you go solid foods sooner. Rather than 2 weeks on solid liquids and 2 weeks on soft foods, I spend one week on each before transitioning to a normal diet.

my Dr. had me on liquids for 1 week soft soilds second week and regular food 3rd week and I have lapband it up to your Dr.

That's exactly what I was wondering about!

Thank you for the info!

I would like Dr. Watkins to explain how The Realize Band has a 42.8% excess weight loss at 36 months and the latest lapband studies show 62% how he is coming to the conclusion they are equal. Also how a band that creases on 3 sides that's straight vs a band that is 360 degrees with an even distribution of Fluid is equal as well. Also what factor besides the money your getting paid determines which band to use? Am I believe you randomly pick a band that came out in the 90's (the Realize Band AKA the Swedish Band in Europe) vs the LapBand AP 2007 with no criteria to make a determination for your patients?

I am set to have the realize band in a few days. this information has been helpful. thanks Dr. Watkins for your input to the site. I will be doing more "research" into this via the website listed.

Good luck to all, no mater which band we are given

I have the Realize band. The first fill was under flouro (for the sake of being a little more aggressive, I think) but the next two were not. No problem finding my port.

I have the website available to me but haven't logged on. I'm going to, I promise!

Dr. Watkins, I trust that you and Dr. Curry (and a host of other surgeons who use both) know what you are talking about when you say they are basically equal.

My husband has the Allergan band (from two years ago) and he's doing great, but for a variety of reasons; I've lost more in my first 3 months than he did. I don't think that proves or disproves the weight loss is better with one over the other, I think it proves there were different circumstances. I don't think I was as sore as he was following surgery, but I tend to have a fairly high tolerance for pain anyway.

If you look at individual gastric band practices the average weight loss results are varied. When you look at pooled data from Europe (both bands have not been in the U.S. long enough) the average weight loss results are very similar. I have not seen any data that validates concern about band creasing. Basically, they are both great products and great companies that believe in supporting their patients. I think it is important for a patient to research both bands and for surgery practices to provide unbiased information about the two products. I believe the patient should decide which band to use as they will ultimately determine their weight loss success. I think it benefits patients to have two bands on the market as both companies are fighting for market share to the benefit of patients.

hope that helps

That's true. Even across some peer-reviewed studies you can see a big fluctuation.

My surgeon's practice quotes a 77+% success rate. That's all their patients across all the different WLS they do, not just bands. It's higher than most of the studies and I think it's because of their approach-- both their pre-op requirements and the follow-up care they provide.

With stats like that, I doubt they are going to see a big difference between their Realize patients and their Lap-band patients.

I am so glad to find this thread....My doctor is the only one in AZ that comes up on the Realize site as...?....certified surgeon??? I noticed that she is not on the lapband site but uses both...up to patient. I was told that there is a slight difference in putting it on...they have to test it in Water first etc... and the ports attach easier...So, I am thinking since she is the Realize guru to go with that one... I'm sure you can't be on both sites????? anyway, I am in the research phase so if anyone has specific comments about why they did or did not choose the Realize band...do tell  Thanks

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
