Hi Everyone

I really need some help and reassurance please. I had surgery March 24th and have since struggled. Foods taste and smell awful, I now hate meat because the smell is so revolting. I'm struggling to eat anything. Will this change? Why does everything smell so repulsive? Will my taste return to normal? I'm now 7 weeks out and feeling quite low. Hope you can help x

I think this is one of the less common effects post surgery but I have heard people on here reaching out about this immediately post op but I assume it goes away because the posts do. I mean I have never heard anyone who says they are several months or a year post op with the same issue. I wish I could help more. Have you spoken to your doctor about this??

My sense of smell is more sensitive, like things smell very strong. But I don't have an issue with everything smelling repulsive.

Maybe a stupid idea but can you like clip your nose with one of those swimming clips so you can't smell while you eat? Just to be able to eat something so you don't end up malnourished.

I have heard of it happening and some people say it gets better. I read a post about a woman who literally had a trash can she carried around while cooking for her family because the smell made her vomit. She said there are still some smells that get to her but nothing like the beginning.

Good luck, check with your team. They may be able to help!

Right now, I've been scouring the kitchen because I SWEAR there's something rotten in here, but I'm the only one that can smell it. I can say the smell of eggs cooking grosses me out now, when it used to be a staple of mine. I've also seen a few things taste different to me now. Not bad, just different. The tea I used to love suddenly has almost no taste to it. The sugar free fruit punch tastes super sweet now. Everything else seems to be normal, so far. I read several posts on here about this, and it seems tastes do change after surgery sometimes. I hope things calm down for you really soon. Have you called your doctor about it, just to see if they have any suggestions?

I used to drink Crystal light fruit punch pre op and post op it’s too sweet. I now make a gallon at a time which requires two packs and I mix the Walmart brand watermelon which is blah with the fruit punch and it’s not too sweet.

Yea for me it was sweets taste sweeter and for some reason I don’t hate fish anymore. Some people have a lot more changes than that though. I tried stuff I hated because of texture though like mushrooms and I still hate those.

Thank you for responding [emoji4]. I have spoken to my doctor and he said that I've obviously responded extremely well to the surgery!! I have to wait until next week to speak to my nutritionist. I'm really hoping that it will go away.

Hi kcuster83, that exactly how I feel! Cooking for my family is torture, everything makes me heave! I might just give that nose clip a try, thank you

It's been since about week 3 roughly. meats are particularly gross smelling and I'm struggling to eat a reasonable amount of anything. I know it's hormonal but I just want to know if things will get easier. X

It's normal and it should pass, I hated the smell of cooking meat straight after surgery and a few other things but I happily cook meat now with no problems. It all settles down and gets better with time.

Oh, gosh, the super nose. My sense of smell was ridiculous for the first 3-4 months. It has backed off a bit in the past few months. It still more sensitive than it was in the beginning. I basically turned into a bloodhound and could smell everything.

I dont feel sick cooking for my family but I certainly do have the heightened sense of smells. Like a few others have mentioned I smell things that no one else in the house can smell lol. The only thing that happened to me post op was by day 6 I could no longer tolerate the commercial Protein Shakes. I gagged every time I tried to get it down. Finally by day 7 I just started making my own Protein powdered smoothies and I feel great. I cant drink protein Water either, too sweet and it gags me.......odd huh?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
