Gout Flare-up, time-frame, and remedies

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I had my sleeve procedure in December and everything has been going well, except for the gout flare up. Since week 2 post op I have been experiencing an on-going gout flare up on my toe which is just about preventing me from walking. After googling, I know its a known possibility and should go away slowly, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Any remedies, drinks, or pills you've found to help? Timeframe yall's lasted before subsiding?

Normal uric acid levels are 7 or below, mine is sitting at 13, so any help or advise is appreciated.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Sleeved 12/22. I swear last week I told my husband I think I have gout. He looked at me weird and I shrugged it off. My big toe was hurting but not a lot. I did a IV Vitamin drip on Monday so maybe that helped because my toe doesn't hurt anymore. Hope you feel better soon. Oh one more thing, my husband gets it all of the time and he takes Tart Cherry.

I don't have gout, but my father does. He can't take the normal meds for gout due to his diabetes and how they affect his kidneys, so he learned about Tart Cherry extract pills. It has to be "tart cherry." He takes them as the bottle directs and it keeps him from having gout flares as frequently as he did prior to starting the supplement, and when he does flare it's not as severe.

When he first started taking them he was in a major flare, and they got him back to normal within four or five days the best I can remember. You should ask your doctor if they're okay for you to take because I know how much they help my dad. You can find them on Amazon. Feel better soon!

Watch your diet. Certain foods will encourage flare ups. There is a prescription medication to manage gout. Can’t recall it’s name. When you first take it the side effects aren’t pleasant as it flushes the excess uric acid out of your body but once that occurs & you keep taking the meds you don’t experience that again.

It could be occurring because the uric acid stored in your fat is being released into your body as you’re losing weight.

I've heard that gout is very painful. I would think that WLS will help with that to prevent future flare-ups because you'll be eating less fatty and triggering foods and your weight will be lower.

My brother had this same problem, doctor told him it would likely flare after his surgery. It sure did. Made the first weeks more miserable.

On the flip side, surgeon said after that it should improve or go away after the weight loss.

I am having the same issue after the first week I have been having flare ups in both knees and ankles. As of yet I have found nothing that helps me with the issues. I currently am on Allupronol and Colchicine for gout as well. I just purchased some tart cherry extract pills I will let you know if they help.

I went with the exact remedy you're describing and it somewhat helped. The only difference was I sent with tart cherry pills then moved to the liquid extract as I felt it would absorb faster. I'm not sure if it worked but it did provide relief.

Fast forward to now and I am only taking Allopurinol daily(when I remember). Weight loss has slowed so flare ups have subsided and I feel alot better. I did alot of research and spoke to my doctors and found that the flare ups are directly tied high uric acid caused by excessive weight loss. Hence my comment about weight loss slowing and flare-ups calming down.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
