Surgery was Monday 12/13. Today is Wednesday 12/15. I feel like I got hit by a truck. I had a hiatal hernia repair and tightening of my pouch and stoma. I can’t keep anything thicker than Water down and that includes liquid pain medication. I did not have this problem first time around. Is it just swelling or did he make it too small?

Its sounds like a swelling, if so it will get a little better every day. You have had a huge amount of surgery, contact your team They need to find a way for you to take your pain relief.

You just had pretty major surgery. Your insides have been pushed, prodded, rearranged & cut. You’ve been pumped full of gas to expand your abdomen so they can see what they’re doing & fluids. You’ll have lots of swelling too. Unfortunately pain is to be expected. But this doesn’t mean you have to just endure it. If you’re struggling to swallow or keep down your pain meds & are experiencing pain ask for an alternative method of giving you pain relief like an injection, patch, through your drip…

The pain does reduce but you had a lot done so it may take longer than others who had a less arduous surgery.

All the best.

I took maters into my own hands last night - I had some norco in the house from a previous orthopedic surgery. I took one of them and split it in half, taking each half 15 minutes apart. It helped a lot. So far I have kept 1oz Protein down for an hour. Taking it slow. Thanks for all the support.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
