This may have been asked before but I dont know how to search topics on here, just the general topics but not specific subjects. Anyway how long is the average people need off of work. I am considering the surgery. No real planning yet, just still debating it. One thing I debate is the time off work. I work for a very small company so I could not take that much time off. I have a desk job, I do walk back and forth through the building quite a bit but that is as strenuous as it gets.

Thank you for your replies.

My doctors told me 4-6 weeks. I work a desk job from home so I went back to work after 2. It was doable, but the exhaustion you feel between weeks 2-6 is wild, because of how few calories you are consuming, so that's something to consider.

i got offered a new job with a locked start date... 6 days after surgery.

like you - its an office job and i sit at a desk aside from walking to the printer, to the bathroom or kitchen, so minimal movement. the first week was rough - i was exhausted and probably quite strange to be around. but i found that it helped me adjust to the changes - so have a think about what works for you - if you need the routine of it to stick to your goals, maybe try going back sooner. or even less hours per day/week as you ease back into work.

I had a desk job. I took three weeks off but probably could have gone back after two.

Surgery recovery varies between different persons. Also, if you have Hiatal Hernia repaired with the surgery, you may be in pain longer.

I had lots of gas pain for 2 days. I work from home, so I started working half day 3 days post op. and full time 4 days post-op. The lack of energy would hit me around 8-9 pm, when my eyes would just close no matter where I was.

After 1 week, for me, the fatigue went away. (after starting Protein shakes).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
