Type 1 Diabetes prior to Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I was wondering if there are any type 1 diabetics here who have had the gastric sleeve, and how the process was for you? I have started the process, and my nutritionist doesn't seem too worried about the diabetes, and my endocrinologist feels as we will just adjust as we are doing this.

I am a type 1 diabetic who is preoperative for bypass. Although you had the sleeve, I would love to hear how it went for you. I wish I could find more type 1s on thos forum.

Everything been great so far. My pre op diet was only one day full liquids. I was told my blood sugars will not take long to correct on its own. I normally wear my Dexcom. Day of surgery my sugar was 125. My doctor adjusted my insulin for my pre and post op. I take 4 shots a day. So far I haven’t had any lows. Blood sugars definitely been better. I have a sliding scale and a ratio to carb count. My incision look pretty good. Have 6. My A1c was 7.9 so not perfect. So far I been able to tolerate everything. That was my worst fear that I would suffer with lows and be unable to get it up but blood sugars definitely been stable.

I use a pump and dexcom. My endo wants me to go back to MDI before the surgery. Which makes sense, but I dread doing all that math again.

My a1c was 7.8. My surgeon told me if it was 8 or higher he wouldn't do the surgery, so I'm happy I was just under.

My biggest worry is going high. Anytime I'm sick or hurt, my blood sugar goes sky high and it is difficult to get it down. I've experienced DKA a couple of times and that scares me thinking about dehydration and vomiting and somehow injuring my newly sewn insides.

I'm glad to hear you're doing well. Are you currently on a liquid diet?

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
