I think I messed up!!

Recommended Posts

I think I messed up! I had my VSG done on the 15th and stayed in the hospital that night. The next day before I was released, they moved me to full liquids, so in the hospital I had cream of chicken Soup and some V-8 juice. Upon getting home I did the same along with my Protein Drinks, Water etc. So…today I tried a green smoothie. It had kale in it, half a banana, 2% milk and some mango. Only drank half of it and within a few hours I was on the toilet with diarrhea. I noticed that the kale was chopped up really fine but you could still see specs in it. I got it from a smoothie place, it wasn’t homemade. Was it too early in the full liquid stage to do smoothies? I also just bought a whole bunch of frozen fruit, soy milk, whey Protein Powder and a ninja bullet to start smoothies and now I’m concerned that my stomach isn’t going to handle this. Could it have been the small speckles of the kale or the sugar from the fruit? Tips? Advice? Thanks!

smoothies seem like they would fit into the purée stage, not liquids. I’d be worried about those small bits getting trapped in the staple line.

Yes, now I’m worried but not sure what I can do about it now. I won’t be doing any more smoothies until the puréed stage. I guess my logic was the consistency was about the same or thinner than cream Soup. Thanks for the feedback!

The amount of sugar from the fruits prob caused dumping.

I suspect that too. It wasn’t even that sweet to me, it was like a barely there taste probably because of the kale. But the half of the banana and the mango do have a high sugar content. Thanks for chiming in!

Many plans don’t include vegetables until soft foods & only a little fruit to begin after that. smoothies would be allowed in purées because that’s what they are really: sloppy purées

On liquids think really watery. The smoothie would have been too thick & yes the sugar in the fruit would have made you sick. The staged return to eating is to protect your tummy while it’s healing - remember all those stitches & staples inside you that are holding your tummy together. It’s a big learning curve but if you go back to sticking closely to the allowed foods on your plan you’ll be fine.

I ate a lot of Soup in the liquid stage but I diluted all of them & even strained them after puréeing hem to ensure nothing lumpy or fibrous was missed & so they were really thin. I even diluted my shakes - doubled the required Water. All the fluids count to your fluid goals for the day so an added win.

Congrats on your surgery.

Thank you. I feel horrible and now I’m contemplating calling the surgeons office to let them know what happened. I should have not done that! From this point moving forward I’ll stick to the creamy Soups and such. I think I was thinking that since they are allowing me sugar free pudding and yogurt, that I imagined a smoothie to be fine…wrong!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
