Hi all! I’m in a bit of a panic, I’m 5 weeks post op, my starting weight was 274lbs. My op weight was 268lbs. At 3weeks post op my weight was 236lbs and somehow my weight since I started purées then eventually solids has been on a steady incline(I’m now at 250lbs🥺) . It’s really disheartening. I’m honestly not sure if I’m not eating properly or whether something else might be wrong. I did have my TOM mid week 4 so I thought it might be hormonal and that I’m retaining Water but nothing seems to be changing.

I drink 2.5l of water a day . I eat less than 700cal a day. I get 70g of Protein in , 15g of carbs and about 10g of fat in total a day. Do I have my quantities wrong? My nutritionist hasn’t been very helpful.

Please can someone offer some advice.

Barring any medical issues or severe Fluid retention are you sure your macros are right?

Per Protein and carb gram = 4 calories, fat gram = 9 calories so based on 70gms protein, 15 gms carbs and 10grams of fat I get 430 calories per day not 700cals a day.

Are you measuring / weighing everything you eat and drink in a day? Are you exercising? What exercise do you do? Have you started any medication that causes fluid retention? Are scales working properly/batteries don't need changing? Scales on a stable surface not carpet/in same location all the time? Are you weighing same time every day (first thing of a morning after you've been to the toilet is probably the best time?

What does a typical day's menu exactly look like for you including all fluids?

What guidance has your dietician or surgeon given you regarding the gain?

If you are taking any medication whatsoever, get in touch with your surgeon and ask him/her to review the prescriptions in order to determine if any have weight gain as a side effect. In particular, there are several prescriptions prescribed for psychological/psychiatric issues that can cause great weight gain. There are other non-psyche meds that, while not causing weight gain, tend to inhibit losses. For example, in one interesting study, researchers found that WLS patients who took Metformin post-surgery lost much less weight and plateaued while those who didn't take it showed much more drastic weight loss.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
