Why are people afraid of atheism?

ALL animals don't go around raping other animals. It is not common behavior even in animals.

Are all religions being attacked here, or just Christianity?

And atheism.

Also, a strange point of view on rape: Animals rape each other. Dogs do, monkeys do, etc...

I don't think it's clear that what animals do would fit the human definition of rape.

And - why? Why do humans have an "instinct" that goes against other species' basic natures?

Because we aren't dogs? :smile2: Why would we do things that help dogs survive if we aren't dogs and they don't help us survive? I guess I don't get this question.

People have opinions, doesn't mean they speak for everyone.

There are plenty who say if one is an atheist they are an idiot.

Who cares what a minority of people think, does it matter?

Instinct... there is a huge difference between instinct and behavior. Raping is not an instinct, it is a behavior. World of difference.

Well, in my personal life, one's opinions of me sometimes matter. If someone calls me an idiot to my face, and depending on who they are, I either laugh, walk away or flatten them on their ass.

On LBT, I was pretty sure the name calling was a no-no. Am I wrong?

I think the rule is to attack the topic, not the person. I do not agree with the person that wrote the idiot comment, but I'm not quite sure if it is actually breaking a rule in R&R or not since he wasn't directing the comment at an individual person.

I think hard nosed republicans that vote according to religion vs. the issues are idiots. I don't think that is breaking any rules so I doubt TommyO was breaking rules but I could be wrong.

Are all religions being attacked here, or just Christianity?

And, is it really being said that if we believe in God, we're idiots?

Just want to be clear on that...

Also, a strange point of view on rape: Animals rape each other. Dogs do, monkeys do, etc... I have no idea if a dog or monkey believes in God or evolution, but either way if rape is wrong because it doesn't do well for the species then why would pack animals rape each other, when all that is ingrained in them is survival of the group? They rely on basic instinct, and that instinct is to kill and rape.

If humans instinct is animal in nature (and, isn't it?) then what moral code is ingrained in us? And - why? Why do humans have an "instinct" that goes against other species' basic natures?

I guess this brings us more towards a "Lord of the Flies" discussion, huh?

Animal rape is generally speaking a matter of establishing social dominance and does not come out of a twisted desire to hurt and humiliate. Most animals do not kill for the sport of it. They will kill in order to eat or in order to protect themselves from predators. Humans are also animals, members of the mammalian class, but are arguably the most complex of all animals.

There are many societies which are far more secular (the Scandanavian countries are notable examples) than Americans are, and there are societies which are much more devout. It certainly cannot be said that a Lord of the Flies situation flourishes in any of those very secular Scandanavian countries. Many of the Islamic countries are very devout but one cannot call these societies successful by most of our western criteria. Indeed, some of those countries do sound considerably closer to a Lord of the Flies scenario, don't you think?

For that matter, some animals eat their young. What about that cries "survival of the group"? Embryonic sand tiger sharks eat their siblings in utero. Not so "survival of the group" there either.

And atheism.

Good point. However, *I* have not called any one an idiot for their beliefs, and it would be nice for some to keep this civil. On both sides. :smile2: I believe that people need to come to their own beliefs and I'm not arguing as much as just curious to know how/what others think. (I'll argue the idiot point, though, because it's *wrong*...ha - couldn't resist.)

I don't think it's clear that what animals do would fit the human definition of rape.

Why not? Usually it's domination not sexual pleasure for humans and, I believe it's the same with other animals - at least, from what I've read about the behavior.

Because we aren't dogs? :tongue2: Why would we do things that help dogs survive if we aren't dogs and they don't help us survive? I guess I don't get this question.

Well, I certainly wasn't saying humans are dogs (although I've dated my share, I guess). I was saying we're animals, and pack animals at that. One argument is that humans *shouldn't* rape because it's morally wrong. And that those morals are based on the fact that we're here for the good of the group.

But, as with dogs, their nature is the "good of the group", too. So, what makes them kill and rape? If it's for the good of the group, which their actions should be since they are pack animals, then why shouldn't humans kill/rape, too?

You're not wrong, but it isn't well enforced, especially in R&R. The response I have heard in the past from moderators is "well, you're in R&R, what do you expect?"

Lets be clear, I did not call Chrsitians idiots, I was not referring to any group in my statement and I think if you read my post you will discover this to be true. I have no control over how you intepreted my comments and I can't understand how you could draw that conlusion from my statement. I was not refering to Christians I was refering to anyone who believes that you must believe in God to have morals. I mean it is an idiotic premise that only those people who believe in a God can be moral people. We only need to take a look at the world we live in or throughout history to discover many people of high morals who do not believe in God.

So I stand by statement that anyone who thinks that only people who believe in God can be moral is an idiot. I know many Christians that believe very strongly that their Athiest freinds are moral so this does not in any way single out Christians, only idiots.

I'd have to agree with you then. I didn't go back to look at the post and I was going by memory. But as you explain it here, I fully agree.

Well, I appreciate the clarification. I did read it wrong. Or, rather, read a more broad stroke of "idiot" than intended.

I have been reading all this and mostly staying quiet because 1) no one's mind is going to be changed on this, so why bother? and 2) most of what I've been thinking (or more, in some cases) has been said.

I've been on both sides. I've doubted and not believed, then came back to my religion (not my denomination, but a belief in something greater.)

What made me jump in was that it seems to me that the anti-Christians are being ruder than the anti-athiests. I could be wrong, and I could be reading more into than there is, as I did w/you, TommyO.

Are any athiests feeling angry as they read this, the way I am as a Christian?

I *feel* that, with the exception of a few posters on either side, the underlying tone is hatred towards Christians in this thread, when the opening question was rather innocent. (Again, in my opinion - which could be way off.)

Nope, not angry. I do get frustrated with ignorance sometimes (many believe if we don't worship a god we must eat babies or something) but overall I'm used to it. It doesn't bother me anymore like it used to.

Now I just consider the source.

Okay, well, right there: What does that mean about consider the source?

Am I taking that wrong? Am I being over-sensitive?

I've dated so many athiests (actually - all past bf's aside from the current one) and been friends with so many that it doesn't bother me, either. I've known dumb ones - and extremely smart ones.

I don't think any of them ate babies...but, if they were athiest babies, I wouldn't mind.

:smile2:

I think you are being overly sensitive. I was in no way referring to you. You asked if atheists are angry about the insults. I said I consider the source. How does that infer you?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
