What the heck! How did I gain weight 2 days after surgery?

Recommended Posts

So I am 2 days posy op, I just weighed myself and I am like 8 lbs heavier than when I WENT IN TO SURGERY! How is that even possible? Is it all the bloating and gas? Day 1 in hospital I ate a quarter of a Jello, 3 tablespoons of chicken broth, 2 Protein Shakes, a tablespoon on refried Beans and a tablespoon of pureed turkey. At home I had a half of a jello, 4 tablespoons of Soup. Today I havent eaten anything. Really what the hell!?

Is this normal???

It's not real weight gain. It reflects swelling, IV fluids they gave you in the hospital and Water retention. The number on the scale doesn't mean much this early. You're good, this is normal healing!

Agree with what others said. I didn’t weigh myself until 2 weeks post-op, having read similar accounts from others. I know it’s hard to resist!

Yeah i didn’t way myself until 6 days after surgery because I didn’t want an inaccurate number frustrating my pre op weight. Today was the 6th day and I’m 5lbs down from my surgery date.

Yes that is normal. You have Water and gas in you so you will the scale a little higher. Give it a week to 2 weeks and you will see move down. I gained 10 pounds from the surgery and two weeks after I was down 15. Give it time you will see.

Oh yeah this one's a real mind-bender. I weighed 207 in the morning of surgery the day I got home I weighed 216 and 2 days later I literally lost 8 lb overnight. It was really interesting to watch. I am now down to 194. I am 11 days post-op.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
