I’m scheduled to have my VGS March 19th but I’m reading everyone’s posts about being consistently hungry. I want to do the sleeve so I’m not hungry all the time! I thought the whole point was to not feel so much hunger. Can I drink Fiber between meals to not feel so hungry?

Does anyone have words of advice for this bc im considered not doing the VGS since I do t want to feel hungry for the next 30+ years!

I got the sleeve almost 2 years ago and hunger has not been a problem so far. In the immediate aftermath of surgery, I had no appetite at all. VSG removes the part of the stomach that produces ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and it will usually result in less hunger (at least for a time). My appetite slowly returned over the next year but it's still much lower than it was pre-surgery (lower in both frequency and urgency).

At this point, I will get hungry if I go long periods without eating but even a small snack will calm my hunger for hours. Believe it or not, even taking my two daily Vitamin chewables will calm my appetite for an hour. Other things that work to calm hunger include: a cup of tea or coffee, flavored water, sugar-free popsicle or broth. I'm a little weird in that I don't eat full meals, instead I eat mini-meals throughout the day. It amounts to about 900-1000 calories in total and since I'm in maintenance, I don't at all restrict how often or how much I eat. I am still careful about the quality of the food I eat but that's the only type of restriction I practice. I don't know how my appetite will progress in the long term, but I have definitely not been tormented with hunger since my surgery.

Everyone's experience is different and you might be hungrier than I've been, but you should know that not everyone has hunger issues. I wish you the best in making your decision!

I will try to give some advice but I was recently sleeved on 11/11/20 and have not experienced hunger. I will say though that I never had hunger or fullness before surgery (one of the reasons I had this surgery). I do have fullness now though which has been amazing for me. I believe if you are newly sleeved and you "think" that you are hungry then it is most likely head hunger. I have had stomach grumblings and with drinking Water all day, I am not certain how others might be hungry after drinking so much. My wife also had surgery the same day as me and she has not been hungry at this point either.

Do you experience hunger now?
Hunger is natural and people feel hunger without the WLS.
The difference maybe between feeling ravenous and uncontrolled pre WLS or hungry but manageable post WLS. Your experience may be different from what you’ve read.

I know for me, I do feel hunger, but it isn't the raging hunger I had pre-wls. I used to get positively hangry, and it was awful.
Now when I get hungry it takes so little to satisfy it and then I'm good for a few hours at least. It's amazing to me!
I had Loop DS 6 months ago.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
