Hi! I had a question regarding weight loss.

Recommended Posts

Hi! My names Jason, or Kai. I am transgender (MtF) and I am getting Gastric Sleeve soon. In about 2 years is when i’d be scheduled to see a surgeon about reassignment surgery.

Id have to get my BMI down to 30, or at my height (6’1), 225 pounds.

I am 18, CW/SW 460, Male, etc (can provide any info).

I was wondering if, with the sleeve, can I reach my GW of 225 in 2 years?

I know this is a tool, i’m planning on treating it as such. I plan not to stray from my diet and spend 10+ hours in the gym a week.

I was just wondering if that was possible.

Hi Kai. To answer your question... it's possible, but the statistical average of gastric sleeve says it's unlikely. There are many people who have gone above an beyond statistical average though. It depends a lot on 1. how your body takes to the surgery, 2. whether you follow the nutritional guidelines, and 3. how determined and motivated you are to work with the surgery and make it work better for you. Personally, since you're at a higher weight I'd suggest gastric bypass or DS or Loop DS. If you have any acid issues I'd definitely say the gastric bypass. But, it's very much your choice. If you feel like you can work for it and keep yourself motivated and are more comfortable with the sleeve then go with the sleeve. So yes, it's possible, but it'll be hard. I wish you the best on your journey!

I agree with NovaLuna. Statistical average for sleeve is about 65% of your excess weight, so that's where most people end up, but some of us can and do go well beyond that. It'll take a lot of commitment on your part, though - but it can be done if you put in the work.

The fact that you are 18 is a very good thing in my opinion. Obviously everybody is different and will have very different results but here is my surgery story (short form).

I was 23 when I had the gastric sleeve surgery. I was 276 (give or take a few pounds) on the day of the surgery. In the first few weeks I lost 50 pounds. I kept steadily losing weight until I plateaued after a few months at 190lbs. I kept doing what I was supposed to do at that point and pretty soon it all started to come off again. Six months after I had the surgery I was down to 133lbs (too low!). I worked to put some weight back on and have been in the range of 155-165 since then, it has been over four years now.

I believe that the weight comes off slower for most people than it did for me but I have always attributed that to the fact that I was so young when I had the surgery. So as I said at the beginning of this post - you being 18 is a good thing and in my non-professional opinion, I don't think your goal is impossible. It is obviously not a guarantee either. My suggestion is just to do what you're supposed to do. Everything your doctor tells you is designed to help. It may seem tedious but it is important. Also, exercise is very important! Not just for losing weight but for feeling better, being healthy, and for energy levels. Good luck with your surgery and your weight loss journey!

-Joshua

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
