GERD before gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

I had reflux before the sleeve, but I controlled it with tums. It was generally a few times a day. My surgeon has me on Pepcid for three months post surgery and thus far I’ve not had a single episode of reflux. It’s been so nice to not be popping tums all the time. I’m kind of worried about when they take me off the Pepcid next month though. I guess we will find out what happens then. If I end up like I was with a few tums each day that’s fine, but I’ve been loving actually not having heartburn for the last few months.

Hi. I was told I had GERD before surgery. It rarely bothered me so it wasn't something I had been actively treating. I maybe had episodes once or twice a year. Anyway, I am currently 9 days post op and had an unexpected episode two nights ago. So crazy because I have been on a liquid diet. I spoke with my surgeon's office and they advised me to take omeprazole every other night and sleep a little elevated. I am under the impression that this is normal and likely short term. Honestly, even if it ends up something I have to actively manage long term I feel like it's absolutely worth it because of how amazing I feel right now. We never know for sure how our bodies will react to these things, but it's about balancing the risks and benefits of our decision. Best of luck!

actually, a lot of us (both sleeve and RNY) are automatically put on omeprazole or something similar for the first 3-6 months after surgery (it was a year for me - but that was back before all the warnings came out about PPIs, so I'm guessing my clinic has probably cut back to 3-6 months as well. Of course, for people dealing with severe GERD, taking PPI's long term is better than getting Barrett's esophagus or worse, cancer. But I don't think there's an issue with taking it short-term. Many of us don't need to continue taking it long term - it's just those first few months after surgery)

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
