Why don’t I get “full”

Recommended Posts

I had RNY 1/15. Everything is going great - it amazes me I have no pain whatsoever and am already exercising (walking) and basically getting the hang of the post op diet. I’m so confused though- I eat that Soup or yogurt (4oz) and feel no significant fullness. I hear others can barely get through a few bites.

Any thoughts?

I am losing steadily so... something is working!

Soup is a liquid and goes right through you. Yogurt takes a little longer, but not much. You'll start to really feel the restriction when you get to the solid food stage.

Thank you! How do I respond to individuals?

If you want to reply to them privately, sending a message is the only way to do that. If you mean replying to them where others can see your reply, I always hit the "Quote" button at the bottom of their message so they (and others) know that I'm replying to them specifically.

I had RNY 12/14 and wondered the same thing. I didn't feel hungry but I never felt full either. I just kept to my plan. Since I have started adding pureed and soft foods, I am noticing it more. In fact, I've had one bad episode and 2 smaller episodes where I had excruciating pain and ended up vomiting. But they were definitely "learning experiences." I can't say that I felt exactly full prior. It was evident in the vomit was that I was not chewing thoroughly enough even though I thought I was. I also have realized that I am eating supper way too quickly. I attribute that to my thought patterns of needing to hurry as there is so much to get done between getting home and going to bed. When I really focus on slowing down, I realize that it's probably wise not to finish what is on my plate (even though it is within my guidelines) and it hasn't happened again.

It’s so interesting that I wasn’t told this! Thank you

Hi Amy

We bypassers (RNY, MGB) have a low pressure pouch, meaning there's nothing really stopping liquids from running through to our intestines. What you should be looking for is satiety (your body sending you signals you had a satisfactory amount to eat), not the "fullness" feeling.

I'm not an RNY'er, so I don't know what your pouch feels like, and I know there's less tolerance of foods in general, but there's no biological reason you should feel "full" from having Soup.

Thank you and I should not compare my experience to others. Thanks again and great explanations from you!

How’s it going in general for you? What’s the yummiest recipe you’ve make during the mushy phase?

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
