Insurance requirement of a year of weights/BMI's

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I have BCBS FEP insurance and have finished all of my requirements except, today, they told me I need a years worth of weights/BMI's. I was just wondering if anyone knows exactly what that entails. I've only been to the doctor MAYBE 3 times in the last year, will this be a problem? I've called my doctor's office to request it but had to leave a voicemail... just waiting for a call back and thought maybe someone here might have experience with this.

Thanks ahead of time for any insight!

I have BCBS FEP too, and what they want is documented weight for the last 2 years. For me, my surgery was in 2020, so I had to provide a note from my MD for 2018 and 2019 that documented my weight. In addition, I had to see my primary care provider for 4 consecutive months for weight checks and counseling, plus a psych evaluation, abdominal sonogram, a visit with a dietician, and an EGD. Then it went to BCBS FEP for approval. It’s a long process but it’s worth it.

My requirements required 5 years of weight history. This was only 1 doctor visit a year that had your weight listed. I was actually able to gather this from the doctors online portal that I went to for me and my wife and was one of the easier requirements that I had.

Five years? They certainly like to make it hard don't they. I know its not really comparable but in Australia, if the surgery is covered by medicare (then the right level of private health insurance applies too after a year) as long as the bmi and/or comorbities applies all is good . For someone to be covered by the public health system without health insurance or paying anything out of pocket generally strict criteria and could possilby be waiting up to two to four years.

If all else fails can do full self pay which is quite variable from surgeon to surgeon, state to state. A lot of people go to Malaysia or Thailand or the surgery too.

My plan, not the same insurance carrier as yours, needed documentation of MONTHLY weigh-ins for the past year.

Thanks for all the replies, they're all so different! My doctor's office just called and said they'll get it faxed over to my weight loss doc's office today. Fingers crossed, hopefully I get good news soon!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
