Bariatric Pre-Op Class

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My surgery is scheduled for December 26, 2007. I am scheduled for my pre-op testing this coming Thursday, December 6. On my list for that day, they have me down to attend a Bariatric Pre-Op Class.

I wanted to see if anyone had to attend a Bariatric Pre-Op Class prior to surgery? If so, what kind of information were you given during this class.

Thanks for your help,

Marie

I attended a seminar at our Bariatric Center as a beginning to my journey--perhaps that's what this class is all about?

It was absolutely great! They had a number of persons lecture on the surgery itself, nutrition, etc. for about three hours and you can get all of your questions answered by professionals.

It should give you a good idea of what your life will be like after surgery and the 'rules' you will have to follow. This tool and its rules are a small trade-off for the future we are facing without surgery! :)

I had to attend one. They basically went over all pertinent info related to the surgery. This was our agenda:

Greeting/Introduction

Pre-op/Post-op

Anesthesia Video

Questions

Dietary

Exercise Physiology

Break

Pharmacy

Diabetes Education (I got to leave before this one since I dont have it)

They had people from the different departments come in and go over their info with us and they gave us handouts. Mostly it was stuff I already knew, either from all the stuff they've already made us do/given us or from previous surgeries, but I did get a free pedometer from the hospital for attending. :) lol

I had to attend two different classes. The first class (taught by an OR nurse who had gastric bypass surgery herself) reviewed pre-op procedures/diet, information about the operation itself, and post-op instructions/diet. The second class (taught by the nutritionist) covered long-term nutrition/eating habits for after the post-op diet period was over. We were able to ask questions as well. In addition to the two classes, we were also required to meet with a fitness trainer at a local gym to discuss establishing a fitness plan.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
