Duodenal switch -Do you physically feel different and what about sex?

Recommended Posts

hi everyone the longer I wait for surgery the more odd questions keep coming up...

so I’m hoping someone can be open with me and answer some or all of the questions ...

If you didn’t know u had the surgery would you feel different to yourself physically? Meaning can you tell anything has been done. Do u feel weird?

Once you’ve healed...does it feel like your missing part of your stomach and your intestines have been rearrange ? Either by comparing how you normally felt pre op or by if you touch your stomach does it feel weird?

also any problems with sex or sleeping? I thought I read somewhere that to lay on your side you kind of had to scoop your side stomach up/intestines up and put on side sleeping pillow.... is that true? Or is there no difference?

Im wondering if we have to be careful with the way we move or lay? If so is that just temporarily or forever?
Or is it just like before but with a smaller stomachs and rearranged intestines.

also is the gas and poo really that bad? Is it controlable? Is it just for the first few months? Is there tricks to control it.

Does the poo Pourtie really work?

if u watch what u eat does it really help with gas and poo?

really wanting to know about if it’s had negative effects when intimate. I don’t want my future partner to know I had surgery.
I want to keep it that way and I want to make sure there will be no physical problems with intimacy later on after recovery. Please any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you. I just didn’t know if your insides would feel weird or u comfortable. Do u have to worry about your intestines getting twisted easy. I know scary thought.

The DS . I thought I would’ve had surgery over with by now but 2020 really put a damper on it all and it keeps getting pushed back. It’s been a year now. With any luck I will get it Feb. wanting Jan but don’t see it happening.
so meanwhile more ?’s are popping up

I had the gastric sleeve. I have been married to my husband for 17 years and I guess I wasn't really concerned about the scars. After 17 years of marriage and 4 children my body is a well used machine, I have many many scars and stretch marks and a story behind each one of them. I am hoping the weight loss will give us many many more years together and maybe I will look at plastics later on maybe I wont we will see what the future holds when it comes.

As far as the gas and the pooing, again, when you are with someone you really love, the human body makes little noise now and then and thats life. I could run to the bathroom everytime I need to toot, I can control it. I have never had to change my pants due to uncontrolled toots with chasers either.....I guess everyone in different. I find Constipation a problem more than the other and by golly if I have to poop and there is only one bathroom available and my hubby is in the shower or bath in the only one available you better bet your bottom dollar if I feel a movement coming on come hell or high Water I will be in that bathroom no matter who is in there, and I will be happy to be on the toilet!

Your stats isn't on your info so I do not know your age but I can tell you this, the older you get the less you care about the little things in life.

I wouldn't be ashamed of having WLS to get in control of your life. WLS is only a tool, the hard work will have to be done by you. I am happy to have my husbands help with this journey. He is also overweight and has decided to do the sleeve as well. So we will be doing a lot of lifestyle changes together.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays :)

As for whether I feel anything ‘missing’ or does my stomach area fell different...the answer is no. I had a full hysterectomy about 5 years ago, and I definitely felt like my insides had been rearranged then. But even that feeling went away after a couple of weeks. With the gastric sleeve procedure I did not have that feeling at all. It was too uncomfortable to sleep on my side for about 2 weeks but I probably could have with the support of a pillow. Now I sleep on my side all the time and it’s completely comfortable, with the exception of my knees feeling much more boney.

The surgery part was not pleasant, but very temporary. I’m 5 months out, and I still have scars, but I’m sure they’ll continue to get lighter. Even now I bet a man wouldn’t say anything. It’s been my experience that men have a completely different set of observational skills than women, and in this case I would expect they wouldn’t even notice. 😁 The scars are small enough that they could easily be explained away with some white lies if you didn’t want someone to know.

I’ve had no problems with gas at all. As for bowel movements, what I eat definitely has an effect. It’s more that since I am consuming so much less that what I’m putting out is much less. I’ve had a couple of instances with Constipation that I never had before. I just make sure to take some Miralax at the first sign of any issues and the next morning I’m right as rain. As I’ve moved into eating more normal foods I’ve had fewer issues with that.

I can definitely tell I had surgery because I can't eat very much and for some reason really only feel hungry in the morning. Despite the fact I had the Loop DS and was told you don't get dumping syndrome they LIED because wheat makes me dump. I don't really get diarrhea unless I eat too much sugar alcohol (and get REALLY bad gas from it too so I avoid the sugar alcohol as much as I can) but my body DOES decide about 2-3 days a week to completely empty itself so you're in the bathroom for a WHILE (TMI, sorry). I'm a stomach and side sleeper and have no issues with sleeping like that nor does it hurt though I can definitely tell my intestines have been messed with when I have my bathroom trips, but outside of that l don't notice a difference. As to the bathroom thing... in the beginning food went right through me, but my system got used to it and now I usually only go #2 every other day or every 2 days, the problem with that is that my system decides 90% of the time that when I DO go I have to empty everything in me so you're are definitely in there for a while. And sometimes will have to go back for a return trip 1/2 an hour to an hour later. But the funny thing is my system is pretty much regular and this always happens around the same time of day. The surgery was one of the best things I ever did for myself and I'm glad I made the choice to have it done. Knowing what I know if I'd had to do it all over, I would.

Mine was revision surgery though.

Id had the sleeve and sadi before.

Re sex: too early to be thinking about that, but the old boy rises so im sure it will be ok ;-)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
