3 days post op and I feel worse...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! Had my bypass Monday Morning. Immediately waking up I felt awful because they had complications during surgery and I couldn't get on narcotics.

However, after the happy drugs I started to progressively get better.

But today (Thursday) I feel much worse. I am not getting much in Protein and calories wise, I am lucky if it's more than a couple of ounces a day.

I also haven't pooped since Saturday night. I originally chalked it up to not having anything in my stomach, but now I don't know...

Any ideas or tips?

Congratulations on making it through surgery.

I don't recall feeling particularly chipper on day 3, of course I was still in the hospital. For context, my surgery was open and other things were also being done. By about day 4 I was afraid I was going to die. By day 6 I was afraid I wouldn't. Then it got better tolerably well.

Effectively not eating for 3 days after a difficult surgery it would be amazing if you didn't feel like crap.

Just focus on getting Protein (drinks?) and fluids. Do the absolute best you can. It's all you can do.

You will do better quickly. Don't expect to feel less that yucky for several days yet, but each day you should marginally improve.

Keep plugging away.

Day 3 is rough. Hang in there. It really will get better. Your #1 goal is to get your fluids in!!!!!!! Protein is not as important as fluids. Sip whatever Protein Shake you can, but you must get the other fluids in as the top priority. Get up and get walking. I know it's hard, but it really will help. It doesn't have to be a lot, but you've got to do it throughout the day. If you haven't gotten a step tracker yet, get one. It doesn't have to be a fancy expensive one. I think I found some for about $25 on Amazon. It will help motivate you to get moving. Blood clots are real (I know cuz I got them after surgery) and moving is the best way to prevent them. This will get better, promise. From this point on, each day should get a little bit better. Congrats on a new life ahead!

Hang in there girl the days after surgery are the absolute worst, But i am here to tell you that it will get better and easier. Don't rush just get thru one day at a time. I'm 30+ days out and I feel your pain.

Swelling peaks a few days after surgery, so it is common to feel worse before you feel better. It's also common to go a few days (and some people up to a week) without a BM... not fun! Talk to your doc about what meds they'd be OK with you taking and know that given a little time it will get better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
