First appointment down

Recommended Posts

So. I had my first appointment with the surgeon this past week. We have agreed on a sleeve gastrectomy. He said the surgery would happen in about 1 month since I'm self-pay. I have an appointment with the dietician next week and with the psychologist the week after. I'm nervous and excited. It's all I can think about. It's all I want to talk about but I'm trying not to drive my husband crazy. I thought this might be the place to talk. Anyone else out there in the same boat that wants to gab it up. I keep perusing these forums and reading all of the posts. I want to engage.

Welcome! I have chosen not to tell anyone in my life (aside from medical professionals) about my surgery, so it's nice to have somewhere to discuss something that is a big part of my life right now.

FYI, in case you don't know how to update your stats, you can click on your username at the top of the screen, then select "My Surgery" under Settings. The info on the "Surgery Information" and "Progress" screens is nice to be able to see when you post (but of course it's all optional and you don't have to enter anything you don't want to share).

Congratulations, self payer here too! I had my surgery about two weeks ago, time flies right by.

Make sure to take plenty of before pictures, weigh yourself, and try to measure everything. I'm down about 22 pounds and I can actually see the results at this point.

I'm so excited for you!

Thank you. I've seen people with stats posted and others asking about them but wasn't sure how to do it. I've updated my info with what I know for now. I'll be sure to keep it up to date.

I planned to keep my surgery plan a secret. But apparently I have an insane need to share. Probably because I'm so excited. I kind of wish I had kept my mouth shut. No one has made any negative comments though so far.

My husband is supporting me but doesn't understand why I can't just make the associated diet changes to lose the weight I need to. Same for his mother. They worry I'll be hurt or unhappy. Despite not understanding, they are being supportive about the surgery. They just worry about my happiness with the lifestyle changes. It makes me feel like I can't really express my own concerns though because I worry they'll try to talk me out of it based on them. I really am anxious to just get it over with so they can see I'm fine.

If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason you're not telling anyone? No judgement, just curiosity. Honestly I wish I had found this forum and got involved before I started talking. Maybe I wouldn't have felt the need.

Congrats! How did the surgery go for you? I'm eager to have mine done but a little anxious about possible pain. I'm allergic to pain meds. As for pictures when I updated my profile I looked for a couple pics to post. It was sad to see how few photos of myself I have. And they're all of just my face. For so long I've hated my body and the way I look. When I was young and thing I was so very photogenic. I wonder if I can get back to that. As hard as it will be though I do plan to photodocument my journey for something to look back on and potentially share.

I had a few reasons for not telling anyone about my surgery. I didn't tell my family because I first looked into this surgery about 15 years ago, and my mom played a big role in talking me out of it because she thought it was dangerous and that I was going to die or have horrible complications. This time around, I did my own research and made my own decision and didn't want to give my mom or anyone else a chance to talk me out of it. I have three siblings who have always been thin, so I have a feeling they would be judgmental about it. People who have never struggled with their weight don't understand why it's not that easy for everyone to just eat less and exercise more.

I didn't tell anyone at work because I have heard negative comments about weight loss surgery from coworkers. Something that has stuck with me for years is a former coworker who complained about his wife's health insurance costs going up because she worked at a small company and two employees had weight loss surgery in one year. This guy was on his wife's health insurance instead of our company's because it used to cost less, and he complained that it was now more expensive than ours because these two ladies were "too lazy to just go on a diet." I have several current coworkers who are really into diet and fitness to the point that they make me uncomfortable, and although I've never heard any comments from them specifically about weight loss surgery, I have a feeling they would be judgmental.

Finally, I am a very private person in general and I am careful about what information I share about my life. I wouldn't tell my coworkers if I were having, say, gallbladder surgery or a hysterectomy, either. People might figure it out on their own if I lose enough weight, but I'm not going out of my way to tell anyone about it.

Are you self pay as well or do you have to jump through insurance hoops?

Given that, I probably wouldn't have told anyone either. I'm glad we have this forum so you won't be alone.

I just called today to schedule my consultation appointment! I'm not concerned about qualifying since my BMI is 44 and I have high blood pressure and cholesterol. I will have to jump through insurance hoops, but they're checking into all that before I actually schedule my appointment.
The only person I've told is my partner, and he is very supportive of me no matter my choices. He's happy with me the way I am (and I truly believe him), but he understands the positive impact it will have on both my physical and mental health. I don't plan on telling anyone else until everything is set and scheduled, and even then it will just be my kids and my parents.
I'm so happy you posted this because I'm sure he'll be happy I've found other people to constantly talk about this with lol. Im sure I'm driving him nuts!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
