Hey guys! I'm 4 months post op and for the last 3 months my tongue is numb on the tip. It's as if I've rubbed orajel on it. I can taste very little. Hoped it would get better with time but it isn't. I've also noticed that my calves are numb too. Not affecting my gait or balance but just numb to the touch. Anyone else?

Hypoglycemia, Hypocalcemia (low Calcium levs) and Vitamin B deficiency (particularly B12) are the 3 most common causes of paresthesia of the tongue after weight loss surgery.

If you haven't been strictly taking your Vitamins (or even if you think you have) I'd have your levels checked as soon as possible.... if you dont get to the bottom of this you risk permanent nerve damage.

Had my blood test last week to see if my B12 was good and it is, so now I'm back to square one. I can't stop losing weight and I'm 10 lbs below what my goal weight was. Can't help but think that if my taste buds were normal I might actually eat the food I crave. Now my Dr wants to stretch my tummy pouch so I can eat more. That is scary!

and did you have the other issues checked?

Hypoglycemia, Hypocalcemia ? B12 is only part of the picture. Numbness (especially in tongue and in calf) is almost certainly nerve related.

Eating more is not going to solve that, if you really wanted to up your calories you could drink coconut cream for crying out loud... is this Dr your surgeon? sounds ridiculous to be suggesting stretching your pouch unless he's actually done an endoscopy to confirm there is an issue.

I didn't have those other things check. He is going to do endo this week to see about stretching it but he's not my surgeon. He's a gastrointestinal Dr. My surgery was in Baja so I am just happy this Dr will even touch me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
