Grief and staying on track

Recommended Posts

It’s been a year since my gastric sleeve surgery and I’ve lost almost 90lbs. During COVID 19 quarantine I gained 5 lbs I believe because I wasn’t being as active. I used to go to the YMCA 3 to 4 times a week, but during the quarantine the Y was closed. On a good note I lost the 5 lbs by drinking lots of Water and being more active at home. 3 days ago my mother passed away in her sleep (not COVID-19). I’m having a hard time eating food, but no problem eating junk. For example I tried to eat a healthy, grilled turkey burger and could only eat a couple bites, but I had no problem eating some ice cream and peanut M&Ms! I know I’m grieving but I’m also beating myself up because I worked so hard to lose the weight and I don’t want to gain it back because I’m an emotional wreck! My husband thinks I’m being too hard on myself, am I?

I’m so sorry for your loss. Of course no one can blame you for turning to anything that might bring you comfort during this difficult time, so don’t beat yourself up for eating the ice cream and candy. Maybe you can find a treat that won’t derail your progress, say, Halo Top ice cream or your favorite Protein Bar. Maybe you can enlist your husband to make your favorite bariatric recipes.

So sorry for your loss. I wish you peace.

Death is no stranger to me and they say time heals but it dont. I hope you are doing some self care that dont involve food. Try googling for self care ideas. There will come other storms in your life and today is a good day to start taking care of you better 💗

You are being hard on yourself. My heart goes out to you for your loss. Give yourself that time to grieve. If you do not give yourself time to process, it will manifest in another way. When you are ready to focus back on yourself, I have no doubt self-care will come back to you.

If you want to somehow place a little control in your current situation, you could seek out alternative solutions: SF-cookies, SF-whip cream, etc. Be kind to yourself!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
