10 days post-op: Need tips for getting rid of bloating and gassy feeling

Recommended Posts

The title really says it all. All the normal surgical pain is under control but the bloating is so bad I can't even wear a bra without being miserable. Any tips for getting that crap under control?

Hi there.

Four of five major surgeries I have had have been laparoscopic with gas. The two things I have found to help with the gas are: walking and anything that will get the bowels moving. For the WLS I was sent home with good instructions for getting the bowels moving, such as walking, stool softeners, mild laxatives. Those helped. Some I needed to be up to a certain level of Water consumption before I could employ, so I would check with the discharge instructions or your surgical service. Hope that helps. P.S. walking seemed to be the most helpful.

Hi! Did your surgeon send you home with a waist binder? ? That really seemed to help my bloating go down. I think medical supply companies sell them as well if you weren't sent home with one. Best of luck, hope you feel better soon

My doctor told me to get Simethicone 80mg chewable tablets and take it after eating and I've been able to handle gas pretty well. I've even been eating hummus almost daily at this point and I'm feeling fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
