Horrible 2nd fill with vomiting

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 9/24 and have lost a total of 25 lbs. I have an APS band that holds 10cc. My first fill was 4 weeks post op with 4 cc placed in the band and my second fill was yesterday at 9 weeks post op. The doctor decided to add 2 cc to the band. I sipped some Water in the office and it went down slow but without difficulty. My dr wanted me on clear and full liquids for 4 days, then 4 days of mushies, then 4 days of soft foods, then back to lap band diet. I went home last evening and tried to eat some creamed Soup. I took about 4 bites and got the heavy chest feeling. For the next 6 hours I was in agony. I vomited 4 times and the last time was pretty violent. I called the office at 2am and my doctor was not on call, it was another surgeon that doesn't do bariatric surgery and wasn't familiar with fills/unfills. I am an RN and trust me, if I would have had a needle and syringe, I would have unfilled my band. That was the worst night of my life. I kept spitting in a bowl because I couldn't swallow my spit. I went in this morning and the dr took out 1 cc and instantly I felt better. I am now able to drink water and broth without difficulty. My question is: How would I know if my band slipped? Is it possible to have a slip after 4 vomiting episodes? Thanks for your time.

I wanted to know the same thing. I had my third fill two weeks ago and have vomited almost every day. Two different times it was very violent. Now I can eat soft things, but get that pain in my chest real often and slim a lot of the food I eat. My Dr. had me do a barium swallow, but the worst of the vomiting happend after the test. Good luck in your journey.

I had my 3rd fill in October, and my dr. made me very tight, so tight that I haven't been able to eat anything but soft foods. I can't eat salad, meat...last night I went to a Christmas party and all I had was one chicken wing and about 3tblspoons of baked Beans and threw up about 6X...very embarrassing. I'm getting concerned because I don't know what kinds of Protein I can have. My intake of food is very little. I had my surgery March 20th and have lost 64lbs so far which I'm very happy about. If anyone has gone thru the same thing as me, I will take any suggestions on how to get more protein in my diet. Thank you.

Reesh:

Sounds like you need to have a slight unfill. You need to be able to eat enough to get the nutrients to stay healthy. Please call your doctor or you're risking a bad situation with your band.

Best wishes.

Reesh, you should not be suffering through that, go and have an unfill. That is too tight, you wont be properly nourished and you may be putting your band at risk. Vomiting is not good for the band and if you do it with any regularity you are at increased risk for slippage.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
