Sorry if there’s a bunch of posts about this already I’m new to this site and scrolled through but figured it was easier to ask I had surgery at 7:30am today and it’s 11:06pm the gas pains are crazy unbearable I’m managing but just wondering how long others had gas for thanks in advance and sorry if there’s already this topic

Not to scare you but my gas pains in my left shoulder lasted for 3 weeks! Pain pills didn’t really help. Heat helped a lot.

My daughter hardly had any pain.

It’s all in the technique your surgon uses to remove the gas. My surgeon wasn’t very good at. My daughter’s was good at it.

I remember it was weeks, but I can't say exactly how long. Fortunately, I had read about it here before my surgery and was prepared for gas pains.

I heard people used gas-x strips to combat the gas but they were discontinued. My surgery is coming up so I picked up some Mylanta gas minis chewable tablets. I'll have to ask if I can take them though or fight through the pain.

Mine lasted for about 2 weeks.--the pain meda helped in the beginning but after that it was only walking around that helped...and BOY did I not want to do that. But it gets better...

I think mine might have only lasted a few days. They seemed to get better every day, though.

Mine lasted about 3 days, walking helped me. Try lying on your left side (if possible) that helped me release some gas.

I had it for about five days. I used gas-x extra strength chewables and had someone pat my back (think like burping a baby; bend over a chair or a couch and have someone gently but firmly pat your back). Along with walking and the back patting, it broke up the worst of the gas and made it just mildly uncomfortable until it went away.

Hang in there. ❤️

Personally I felt bloated for days maybe even a week before I felt normal the pain was in my belly was unbearable for the first few days but I think I have low pain tolerance...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
